According to Mr. Ha Van Thanh - Director of Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, after receiving information about dead fish in the Da Co canal area, the company sent staff to collect fish and treat the environment here and some neighboring lakes.
“Our initial estimate is that the number of dead fish is about 5-7 tons. Currently, the company's workers are collecting all of these fish and cleaning up the environment in this lake area. It is expected to be completed by tonight. Because the number of dead fish is large and scattered, the treatment will take a long time,” said Mr. Thanh.
According to Mr. Thanh, the cause of the mass fish deaths was determined to be the early season rains causing sudden changes in the water environment.
Previously, after the first rain of the season on September 10, people living on Chon Tam 6 Street near Da Co Canal discovered many dead fish floating around, causing an unpleasant smell.
"After the rain, fish started to die and float. Yesterday and today, the fish floated white on the canal's surface, giving off a foul smell. We called the treatment unit many times but no one has come yet" - Ms. Ngo Thi Hong Thanh - a resident of Chon Tam 6 Street said.
According to the reporter's observation, on the evening of September 13, dozens of workers were using small boats to salvage dead fish. The dead fish were mostly tilapia, each weighing about 0.3 to 0.5 kg.
Da Co Canal often has dead fish and a strong stench, especially after heavy rains. The stench makes people living nearby extremely miserable.
