The Facebook page of Vu Tan Dat, son of singer Trong Tan, constantly features moments of the two of them sharing the stage or simply practicing together. From artistic programs celebrating major political events of the country to music live shows in many provinces and cities, this father-son duo is becoming a familiar and beloved image among the audience. Vu Tan Dat, born in 2004, is currently a vocal student at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Initially, he studied jazz drums, but in his third year, his father discovered his hidden singing talent and began vocal training. From then on, Tan Dat switched to studying intermediate-level vocal music and began a new journey under his father's direct guidance. Tấn Đạt's first and most demanding teacher was Trọng Tấn. On his personal page, the student often recounts his home lessons with his father, sometimes humorously noting his "breaking out in a sweat" due to the hot weather and the technical pressure. In March 2026, the two practiced "Tiếng đàn bầu" (The Sound of the Zither) together – a song Tấn Đạt himself considered a major challenge, requiring both vocal skill and emotional depth. Those practice moments, though arduous, showcased the father-son bond over the song closely associated with Trọng Tấn's voice.

Recently, Tan Dat won second prize at the Hanoi Singing Contest 2025. From the qualifying rounds, Vu Tan Dat attracted attention as the son of singer Trong Tan. In the final round, he chose to perform two songs: "My Homeland Has Never Been So Beautiful" and "Legend of Ho Guom Lake." Sitting in the audience cheering him on, Trong Tan was more nervous than he was on stage himself. Following his success at the Hanoi Singing Contest, Tấn Đạt received more and more performance invitations. The father and son duo appeared together at various events, from the "Sunrise in the Buddhist Realm - Tam Chúc" spring celebration program to the "Forever One Belief" art performance welcoming the National Assembly elections in March, the "Radiant Nation" event in Thái Nguyên on April 30th, and most recently, the " Ho Chi Minh - His Name Shines Forever" program in Bắc Kạn in mid-May. The father and son also previously performed together in VTV's "Spring Flower Song" art program. The entire family of four – Trong Tan, his wife, and their two children – appeared together on the red carpet of this event, showing that music is not only a profession but also a bond that connects the whole family.
Besides the serious moments on stage, Tan Dat's personal page also reveals an interesting glimpse into the everyday life of the father and son - pickleball games on the outdoor court, trips during Tet (Lunar New Year), and expressive studio photos showcasing a range of moods from serious to humorous. Despite inheriting his singing talent and artistic environment from his family, Tan Dat is clearly aware of the need to forge his own path. "I don't feel pressured by my father's fame; I will strive to create my own place so that I won't be called Trong Tan's son," Vu Tan Dat shared with VietNamNet. Trong Tan doesn't hide his pride when talking about his son. Besides being his direct vocal coach at home, he's also his partner on many stages. Trong Tan once said of his son: "I hope that in the future he will become an even more complete artist than his father." Tan Dat is busy with his final exams at the academy while still maintaining a regular performance schedule with his father. His journey, from a jazz drumming student transitioning to vocal music, then winning an award at one of Hanoi's most prestigious competitions and performing alongside his father on major stages in just a few years, is proof of the saying "like father, like son."
