Onions contain compounds such as quercetin, an organic sulfur compound that can stimulate insulin production, helping to fight diabetes.
Here are some ways to consume onions that may help reduce the risk of diabetes:
- Fresh onion juice helps the pancreas produce more insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Onion juice is believed to be effective in treating type 1 diabetes. You can puree an onion, strain the juice, or chop an onion and soak it in a glass of water to drink daily. Before trying this method, consult your doctor as the amount of onion used needs to be appropriate for the diabetic patient's condition.
- Eating raw onions is better because they lose some of their nutrients when cooked. To make them more palatable, you can add onions to salads or omelets.
- You should only eat a maximum of 30-50g of onions per day. However, avoid eating onions with seaweed, honey, shrimp, or fish… For example, when eaten with fish, some substances in onions cause the fish protein to coagulate and settle in the stomach. This not only reduces the amount of protein and nutrients in both foods but also causes indigestion and bloating. Therefore, it no longer helps regulate blood sugar levels.
