Vietnam U19's opponent in their opening match of the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship is Timor Leste U19, considered the easiest team in Group A. In this match, Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team is not only aiming for three points, but also determined to score many goals to improve their goal difference and build momentum before the two more difficult matches against Myanmar U19 and Indonesia U19.
At this year's Southeast Asian Championship, the Vietnam U19 team is not at its strongest, with several key players such as Le Phat and Gia Bao absent. However, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi remains very confident, emphasizing the team's determination to face the challenges of this tournament.

"My coaching staff and I have prepared very carefully for the Vietnam U19 team to approach the Southeast Asian tournament with a determined, never-give-up spirit. No matter how difficult the challenges may be, the Vietnam U19 team will overcome them together," the Japanese strategist affirmed.
Against a less-fancied opponent like U19 Timor Leste, U19 Vietnam will likely play an attacking game, even launching an early offensive. However, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi will certainly have requirements regarding the proper allocation of energy for his players.
The Vietnam U19 team will play two matches against Timor Leste U19 and Myanmar U19, both at 4 PM, when temperatures could reach 35-36 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the young Vietnamese players need to ensure they maintain their physical fitness, not only aiming for victory within 90 minutes, but also preparing for the "final" match in Group A against host Indonesia, and further ahead, the semi-final.

Vietnam U19 team is determined to win their opening match.
Historically, Vietnam U19 has a clear advantage, winning all four of their most recent encounters against Timor Leste U19 (4-0, 4-1, 2-1, 2-0). While respecting their opponent, this is a match that Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team must win, and even win convincingly, to get off to a good start in their quest for the championship.
The U19 Vietnam vs U19 Timor Leste match will kick off at 4 PM on January 6th at the Sumatera Utara Main Stadium in Indonesia.
