How to send large attachments via email using iOS features.

According to SlashGear , sharing large files has always been a challenging task in the digital world . When nearby, Apple users can use AirDrop to exchange files, but when the recipient is far away, the situation becomes more difficult. Typically, users have to rely on third-party cloud storage platforms (or iCloud if there is enough space), upload the file, and then share the download link via email or messaging app for the recipient to download.

But few people know that iPhones have a built-in feature called Mail Drop, which allows users to easily and securely share large files via email. Importantly, you don't need to pay for iCloud+ to use this feature.

How Mail Drop works

Instead of compressing and attaching files to emails, Mail Drop uploads them to iCloud as original files to preserve quality and data. Recipients receive an iCloud link to the file and can download it using any web browser (even if they don't have an Apple ID).

Furthermore, the 5GB attachment limit doesn't take up any space on the user's iCloud. Therefore, even if you've used up your free 5GB iCloud storage, you can still use Mail Drop. In short, it's the perfect solution for sharing large files over regular email.

Mail Drop allows you to send large attachments via email.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Attached files are only available for download for 30 days. Additionally, Mail Drop has a storage limit of 1 TB; if you exceed this limit, you will need to wait for other files to expire and for storage space to be freed.

How to use Mail Drop

The advantage of this feature is that it doesn't require any settings adjustments or manual activation. When the Mail app detects that a user is sharing a file that is too large, it will automatically ask if they want to use Mail Drop. To use it, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Press the Compose button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  3. Add recipients, subject, and email body. If you have multiple accounts, select the account you want to send the email to.
  4. Tap the attachment icon on your keyboard and select the necessary files.
  5. Finally, press the Send button (blue arrow) in the upper right corner. The app will automatically use Mail Drop if the attachment size is too large; you just need to select 'Use Mail Drop'.

Depending on your network speed and the size of the attachment, emails may remain in your Outbox for a while while the file uploads to the iCloud server.

Similarly, you can also use Mail Drop on your iPad or Mac. Recipients will receive your email with a link to download the attachment and an expiration date.
