How to send 'huge' attachments via email using iOS features

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/01/2024

According to SlashGear , sharing large files has always been a 'difficult' task in the digital world . When nearby, Apple users can use AirDrop to exchange files, but when the recipient is far away, the story becomes more difficult. Usually, users have to rely on third-party cloud storage platforms (or iCloud if there is enough space), upload the file, then share a link via email or messaging app for the recipient to download.

But few people know that on the iPhone there is a feature called Mail Drop, which allows users to share large files via email easily and securely. In particular, you will not need to spend money to buy an iCloud+ package to use this feature.

How Mail Drop Works

Instead of compressing and attaching the file to an email, Mail Drop uploads it to iCloud as a native file, preserving its quality and data. The recipient will receive an iCloud link to the file and can download it using any web browser (even if they don't have an Apple ID).

Furthermore, the 5GB limit on attachments does not take up any space on the user’s iCloud. So, even if you run out of your free 5GB iCloud storage, you can still use Mail Drop. In short, it is the perfect solution for sharing large files over regular email services.

There are a few things to note, however. Attachments are only available for download for 30 days. Additionally, Mail Drop has a storage limit of 1TB, and if you exceed this limit, you'll need to wait for other files to expire and your storage space to free up.

How to use Mail Drop

The advantage of this feature is that there is no need to adjust settings or enable it manually. When the Mail app detects that a user is sharing a file that is too large, it will automatically ask if they want to use Mail Drop. To use it, do the following:

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Tap the Compose button in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. Add recipients, a subject, and email content. If you have multiple accounts, select the account you want to send the email to.
  4. Tap the attach icon on the keyboard and select the required files.
  5. Finally, click the Send button (blue arrow) in the upper right corner. The app will automatically use Mail Drop if the attachment size is too large, but you just need to click 'Use Mail Drop'.

Depending on your network speed and attachment size, the email may sit in your Outbox for a while while it uploads to iCloud servers.

Similarly, you can also use Mail Drop on your iPad or Mac. The recipient will receive your email with a link to download the attachment and an expiration date.
