3D Secure is a solution designed to enhance the security of online transactions. With this method, in addition to the usual authentication steps, the bank will send a one-time transaction password (OTP) via SMS or email for the customer to enter to complete the transaction. The technology ensures that only the customer, as the cardholder, will have the password to complete that transaction.

According to a representative from Vietcombank, this method is widely used worldwide . In the United Kingdom and some European countries, retailers are required to use 3D Secure for all online card transactions. However, due to various factors including the desired level of security, user experience, and technical implementation capabilities, not all online payment and e-commerce platforms use this method. Users can identify websites that use 3D Secure through the icon displayed on them.

Since 2018, Vietcombank has been using 3D Secure for online payments. This aligns with its strategy of investing heavily in technology to ensure fast, easy, and secure card payment transactions.

Vietcombank card transactions that have successfully undergone 3D Secure authentication (via SMS OTP or email OTP) can be authorized immediately without going through online payment registration status checks or other security information such as CVV/CVC verification. This allows customers to make online payments faster while still ensuring the security of their card transactions.

3D Secure is applied free of charge to all international credit and debit cardholders bearing the American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and JCB brands issued by Vietcombank. To complete a transaction, users select goods and services from the online website with the 3D-Secure icon, then enter the required information, choose how to receive the authentication password via SMS or email; enter the provided password, and the transaction will be completed.

A representative from Vietcombank added that the explosion of the Internet and online social platforms, along with e-commerce, demands increasingly diverse and convenient payment methods. This poses a challenge for payment service providers to enhance security and safety while maintaining ease of use and customer-friendliness.

Besides 3D-Secure, some institutions previously used CVV - Card Verification Value. This method verifies the legitimacy of a transaction by checking the three- or four-digit security code located on the back of most debit and credit cards. CVV verification allows the cardholder's code to be compared with the bank's code to ensure the cardholder is the one making the transaction. However, 3D-Secure remains a more secure authentication method.
