3D Secure is a solution designed to enhance the security of online transactions. With this method, in addition to the usual authentication steps, the bank will send an additional one-time transaction password (OTP) via text message or email for the customer to enter and complete the transaction. The technology ensures that only the customer, as the cardholder, will have the password to complete the transaction.

According to Vietcombank representative, this form is widely used worldwide . In the UK and some European countries, retailers must use 3D secure for all online card transactions. However, due to many factors including the desired level of security, user experience, technical implementation capabilities, not all online payment and e-commerce platforms use this method. Users can recognize online websites that apply 3D Secure through the symbol attached to it.

Since 2018, Vietcombank has applied 3D Secure in online payments. This is consistent with the strategy of focusing on investment in technology, ensuring fast, easy and safe card payment transactions.

Vietcombank card transactions that have been successfully authenticated with 3D Secure (by SMS OTP or email OTP) can be authorized immediately without having to go through the steps of checking the payment registration status on the Internet or some other security information such as CVV/CVC. This allows customers to make online payment transactions faster while still ensuring the security of card transactions.

3D secure is applied free of charge to all international credit and debit cardholders of American Express, Visa, Mastercard, JCB brands issued by Vietcombank. To make a transaction, users select goods and services from the online website with the 3D-Secure logo, then enter the required information, choose the form of receiving authentication password via SMS, email; enter the provided password and the transaction will be completed.

Vietcombank representative added that the explosion of the Internet and online social platforms along with e-commerce requires increasingly diverse and convenient forms of payment. This poses a problem for payment service providers in terms of enhancing security and safety while still being easy to use and customer-friendly.

In addition to 3D-Secure, units have previously applied CVV - Card Verification Value. This method helps verify the legitimacy of the transaction by viewing the three or four digit security code located on the back of most debit and credit cards. Verification via CVV code allows the cardholder's code to be compared with the Bank's code to ensure that the cardholder is the one making the transaction. However, 3D-Secure is still a more secure authentication method.
