Cambodia announces the enactment of a law on military service.

Recently, Acting Head of State and President of the Senate of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, signed a decree promulgating the Law on Military Service, which stipulates that citizens who evade military service will be sentenced to imprisonment from 6 months to 2 years in peacetime and from 2 years to 5 years in wartime.

According to the decree, all citizens aged 18 to 25 must perform military service as prescribed by law, while women perform it on a voluntary basis. The term of military service is 24 months from the date of enlistment, but it may be extended by no more than 6 months if necessary, at the discretion of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

For evading military service, offenders may face imprisonment from 6 months to 2 years and a fine of $250-$1,000 during peacetime. In the event of war or external attack, the penalty increases to 2-5 years imprisonment along with a fine of $1,000-$2,500.
