The Can Tho Department of Construction has submitted a proposal to the City People's Committee regarding the relocation of the Can Tho Stadium and Sports Center from their current location in the center of Cai Khe ward. This proposal aims to free up 6.5 hectares of land for the development of commercial projects, given the current low efficiency of the sports facility.

Reasons for proposing relocation
According to Mr. Le Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, the Can Tho Stadium and sports center currently have very few activities, causing a waste of land resources. "Each year, the stadium only hosts a few events, mainly motorcycle races. The prime land in the city center remains vacant year-round," Mr. Dung stated. The relocation is considered appropriate for the city's development orientation, especially since Can Tho does not yet have a free trade zone or large-scale economic zone.
The proposed new location is subdivision 17, within the regional-level urban planning area for health, education, culture, and sports in the former O Mon district, nearly 20 km from the city center. The relocation is expected to create a new, modern sports complex and attract more effective investment.
Current status and history of the stadium
The Can Tho Stadium, built over 40 years ago, is located on Le Loi Street, next to the Hau River. The structure features a bowl-shaped grandstand with an initial capacity of up to 50,000 seats. In 2019, the stadium was renovated, with plastic seats installed in some stands, reducing its capacity to approximately 30,000 people. However, many parts of the stadium are now dilapidated and damaged.
In the past, this was the home stadium of Can Tho Football Club. However, the team disbanded in 2023 due to financial difficulties. Since then, no professional team has registered to use Can Tho Stadium as their home ground. The last time the Vietnamese national team played here was in a friendly match against Avispa Fukuoka (Japan) in 2016.
Planning and development orientation
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, said that the city has acknowledged and agreed in principle to continue studying the relocation plan. He requested that relevant departments conduct a thorough assessment, balancing the needs of urban development and sports activities, ensuring it is consistent with the city's overall planning.
The city encourages the study of investing in a large-scale sports, commercial, and service complex in Zone 17 to create new development momentum. At the same time, the existing land in Cai Khe ward, after relocation, needs to be effectively utilized to become an economic and urban highlight for Can Tho.
