On the morning of May 28th, the Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade solemnly held the opening ceremony of the 2026 Durian Consumption Peak Week. The event aims to support durian consumption for farmers, cooperatives, and businesses in the city during the harvest season. The week runs from May 28th to June 4th.

Mr. Hua Truong Son, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade, said that currently, the entire city still has about 2,400 hectares of durian trees yet to be harvested, with a yield of about 36,000 tons. Meanwhile, the consumer market demands increasingly high standards regarding quality, traceability, and packaging specifications; transportation and preservation costs remain high during the peak harvest season...
With a large volume of durian ready for harvest, there is an urgent need to connect producers with markets to avoid oversupply, stabilize prices, and ensure outlets for farmers' produce.
Therefore, Can Tho launched the Durian Consumption Peak Week to mobilize resources from the political system, businesses, and the entire society to participate in supporting durian consumption in the area.
The leaders of the Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade called on units and businesses to continue cooperating in connecting durian consumption, prioritizing purchasing, stimulating consumption, and expanding the distribution system for Can Tho durian. Cooperatives and farmers were advised to improve product quality, comply with safe production processes, and ensure traceability…
The Department of Industry and Trade also requested that departments, agencies, and units in Can Tho City disseminate information to all officials, civil servants, and employees in their respective agencies and units to encourage them to participate in purchasing and consuming durian to support the peak week campaign.

Currently, Can Tho has over 14,480 hectares of durian plantations, of which more than 8,600 hectares are producing fruit, yielding approximately 105,000 tons per year. Of this, over 2,700 hectares have been granted 127 planting area codes. However, recently, the durian acreage in Can Tho has been rapidly increasing, with many areas undergoing conversion without proper planning and lacking technical expertise, leading to inconsistent quality. The supply chain is fragmented, resulting in consumption primarily through middlemen.
Regarding export markets, over 90% of production is exported to China, making it vulnerable to policy changes.
