The Toronto Star reported on January 15, citing informed sources, that Canada could impose retaliatory tariffs on up to $105 billion worth of US imports if President-elect Donald Trump increases tariffs on Canadian goods and services.
Canada has drawn up a list of targets but will hold consultations before taking action.
The source added that the extent of Canada's response will depend on what the upcoming Trump administration does.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with leaders from 10 Canadian provinces to discuss how to respond to any US tariffs and a list of tariff targets.
"All retaliatory measures are open," Trudeau stressed after the meeting. He said any response would be strong, but declined to elaborate.
During his election campaign, President-elect Donald Trump announced he would impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports upon taking office on January 20th. This could severely damage Canada, as the US is a major trading partner.
Recently, Mr. Trump said that he would not rule out using economic pressure to make Canada the 51st state of the United States if the neighboring country did not address Washington's concerns about immigration or the trade deficit.
