The Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department of Phu Tho General Hospital has just successfully treated a 58-year-old female patient from Cam Khe district who was poisoned by eating toad meat and eggs. One hour after eating toad meat and eggs, Ms. C. showed signs of poisoning: vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The patient was taken to the district medical center and immediately transferred to Phu Tho General Hospital for emergency treatment.

The patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit - Anti-Poisoning Department of Phu Tho General Hospital with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, nausea, frequent loose stools, and chest pain. Doctors quickly conducted clinical and paraclinical examinations and discovered that the patient had a healthy medical history, but the electrocardiogram showed a slow rhythm. Immediately, the patient was prescribed emergency gastric lavage, activated charcoal injection, and medication to increase blood pressure and heart rate continuously.

After 5 hours of emergency care, the patient passed the critical stage, his heart rate and blood pressure were controlled and stable. After 3 days of monitoring and active treatment, the patient was alert, no longer had chest pain, his heart rate and blood pressure were normal, and his health gradually recovered.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai - Head of the Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison, Phu Tho General Hospital: "Toads contain the poison bufodienonid and bufotoxin throughout their skin, salivary glands - parotid glands, internal organs and eggs. Toads can cause poisoning throughout their entire life cycle: eggs, tadpoles, baby toads, adult toads. Toad venom can cause dangerous symptoms in the digestive, respiratory, nervous and especially cardiovascular systems."

According to folk beliefs, eating toad meat helps improve health and treat malnutrition, however, during the preparation process, toad venom can easily contaminate the meat, causing poisoning. Therefore, doctors recommend that people should not process toads as food because toad venom can be life-threatening, and the nutritional value of toad meat is no different from other types of meat. When there are signs of poisoning after eating toad meat, the patient should be immediately transferred to the nearest medical facility for timely first aid and emergency care./.
