Nicaraguan player (white shirt) was arrested by police. |
Nine Costa Rican police officers entered the National Stadium with an arrest warrant issued by a plaintiff in a child support lawsuit. The identity of the arrested player was not released. The case was eventually resolved after the two sides reached an agreement to settle the debt immediately after the match.
"The Nicaraguan delegation was informed that the relevant amount was paid and a report was sent to the court in charge of the subsidy case," confirmed the director of the Costa Rican Public Service, Marlon Cubillo.
However, the Nicaraguan Football Federation (FENIFUT) was outraged. In an official statement, they strongly criticized the actions of the Costa Rican authorities, saying that the police presence just before the match "created an atmosphere of tension, confusion and instability for the entire team".
FENIFUT also confirmed that the team arrived in Costa Rica 3 days ago and all information about the identity and whereabouts of the players was known to the host. "We request FIFA and relevant sports authorities to investigate the incident, to ensure that similar actions do not recur in official tournaments," the statement said.
Despite the severe psychological turmoil, Nicaragua still finished the match. However, Costa Rica won 4-1 with a double from Alonso Martinez, thereby strengthening their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. After 4 matches, Costa Rica is 2 points behind the top team Honduras, while Nicaragua is at the bottom with only 1 point.
