Smart farming, billions in profit.

(GLO) - Amidst the scorching sun of the Central Highlands' dry season, the 20-hectare coffee plantation of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nghia's family in Hamlet 1 (Bien Ho Commune, Gia Lai Province) remains lush green. The rows of straight trees are meticulously cared for thanks to a continuously operating automatic irrigation system that delivers water directly to the roots.

Few would guess that this coffee plantation is nearly 30 years old. Instead of cutting it down for complete replanting, Mr. Nghia chose a new approach: rejuvenating the plantation using grafting techniques.

Mr. Nghia shared: "I applied this technique to rejuvenate my coffee plantation. Just two years after grafting the shoots with high-quality coffee varieties, the trees entered the productive stage."

To date, almost all of the trees in the orchard have been grafted, so even though the original trees are 30 years old, they remain healthy and produce a stable yield. I also apply techniques to treat the root system to eliminate diseases, so the orchard has been almost completely revitalized.

In addition to applying techniques to improve his coffee plantation, he has also gradually mechanized various stages of production. From watering and fertilizing to weeding and tilling, machinery has been invested in, significantly saving labor and production costs.

Thanks to smart farming practices, managing large areas has become easier. In recent years, he has continued to diversify his crops by intercropping 400 durian trees with various other fruit trees in his coffee plantation.

The economic benefits of the model are quite evident. Last year, coffee yield reached approximately 5 tons of beans per hectare. Along with income from durian and other fruit trees, the family's total revenue exceeded 9 billion VND. After deducting expenses, the family earned a profit of over 5 billion VND.

Mr. Nghia said: "When applying smart agriculture , farming work becomes much easier. With proper mechanization, managing the orchards is also much more convenient than before. We invest step by step, ensuring quality at each stage to make production increasingly professional."

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Noi, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Bien Ho commune, in the context of agricultural production being heavily impacted by weather and market fluctuations, the application of science and technology is an essential direction to improve efficiency and achieve sustainable development.

"Mr. Nghia's model is an effective and innovative approach, demonstrating the boldness of farmers in changing their production mindset. This model is suitable for large-scale farming, both increasing economic value and aiming for sustainable development," Mr. Noi commented.

Thanks to his efficient production model, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nghia has been repeatedly commended by farmers' associations at all levels in the "Excellent Farmers in Production and Business" movement and other patriotic emulation movements at the grassroots level.
