Granting geographical indication certification for "Tien Phuoc" pepper from Da Nang.

On the morning of May 24th, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Da Nang City, announced that pepper products from the communes of Tien Phuoc, Lanh Ngoc, Thanh Binh, and Son Cam Ha in Da Nang City have officially been granted a Certificate of Registration for the geographical indication "Tien Phuoc" by the Intellectual Property Office.

Accordingly, based on proposals from the locality and surveys and product evaluations, the Department of Science and Technology has developed and proposed the science and technology task "Registration, management and development of geographical indications for Tien Phuoc pepper products", under the Intellectual Property Development Program until 2030.

The project is led by the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, with the Department of Science and Technology as the local managing agency.

As a result of the task, on April 29, 2026, the Intellectual Property Office issued Decision No. 179/QD-SHTT granting Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration No. 00152 for the product "Tien Phuoc" pepper.

The People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune is the representative organization of the communes assigned to manage the geographical indication "Tien Phuoc" for pepper products, with the protected geographical area belonging to Tien Phuoc, Lan Ngoc, Thanh Binh and Son Cam Ha communes (Da Nang City).

According to the Director of the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology, Tien Phuoc pepper is renowned for its rich aroma, distinctive spicy flavor, and high quality. According to the geographical indication description, the product comes in three main forms: green pepper, black pepper, and white pepper. Specifically, Tien Phuoc black pepper has a piperine content of 6.82-7.17% and a volatile oil content of 2.47-2.67%; white pepper has a piperine content of 7.32-7.44%, creating its characteristic spicy flavor.

Protecting the geographical indication "Tien Phuoc" for pepper products is of significant importance in establishing a legal basis to safeguard the reputation, quality, and origin of the product; creating conditions for organizing management, quality control, traceability, and market development in accordance with regulations. This is a prerequisite for building and developing a sustainable product value chain, increasing added value and competitiveness. At the same time, it also motivates farmers to boost production, improve product quality, and expand commercial scale.

On the morning of May 25th, the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune (Da Nang City) will hold a ceremony to announce and receive the geographical indication protection certificate for "Tien Phuoc" pepper at the Tien Phuoc commune People's Committee headquarters. The ceremony will be attended by representatives from the Intellectual Property Office, the Department of Science and Technology, and other relevant agencies and units, especially leaders and farmers from the communes within the protected geographical area.
