Earlier on the evening of March 7th, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, PTTM, 39 weeks pregnant with her first child, was rushed to the emergency room with shortness of breath and generalized hives after eating snails. Upon admission, the patient showed signs of grade 3 anaphylactic shock with a rapid pulse of 128 beats/minute, dangerously low blood pressure of 72/35 mmHg, and a respiratory rate of 26 breaths/minute.
Doctors immediately implemented emergency protocols, providing oxygen support and performing intensive resuscitation on the mother.
Simultaneously, the on-call team quickly consulted with obstetricians to assess the fetal condition. Monitoring using non-invasive imaging techniques revealed a fetal heart rate of only 90-100 beats per minute, significantly lower than normal and showing no improvement after a few minutes of monitoring, confirming acute fetal distress.
Faced with the life-threatening risks to both mother and fetus, the doctors decided to perform an emergency cesarean section. With the urgent coordination of the emergency, obstetrics, anesthesia and resuscitation, and neonatal intensive care teams, the surgery proceeded quickly.

After about 30 minutes, a baby girl weighing 3.2 kg was safely delivered. Currently, both mother and baby are in stable condition and continue to be monitored in the Obstetrics Department.
Dr. Nguyen Hoang Linh, Specialist II in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thu Duc General Hospital, stated: “This was a very dangerous emergency case where the pregnant woman was simultaneously experiencing severe anaphylactic shock and showing signs of acute fetal distress. Rapid assessment, correct treatment according to protocol, and timely surgical decision were crucial factors in ensuring the safety of both mother and baby.”
Based on this case, health experts advise pregnant women to be cautious with foods that are likely to cause allergies, especially seafood. If unusual symptoms such as shortness of breath, hives, or low blood pressure appear, they should go to the nearest medical facility for prompt treatment to ensure the safety of both mother and fetus.
