Scientific conference with the theme: Advances in Ophthalmology: Clinical Practice and Innovation
On May 7th, DND International Eye Hospital organized a scientific seminar on the theme "Advances in Ophthalmology: Clinical Practice and Innovation," with the participation of numerous ophthalmologists, surgeons, refraction specialists, representatives from ophthalmology facilities nationwide, and international experts.
This event commemorates the 15th anniversary of DND International Eye Hospital, and is also an opportunity for experts to meet, exchange experiences, and update on new advances in ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment, while strengthening connections and expanding opportunities for cooperation.
Reports presented at the conference indicated that current trends in ophthalmological treatment are strongly shifting towards personalization and the application of advanced technology to improve accuracy, safety, and visual quality for patients.
One of the areas of interest is the treatment of presbyopia – a condition characterized by a decline in near vision that often occurs with age.
There are currently many new advances in the diagnosis, assessment of visual function, and modern treatment trends for presbyopia worldwide , ranging from specialized glasses to significant advancements in presbyopia surgery and lens replacement. Among these, the Presbyond Laser Blended Vision method stands out – a presbyopia treatment using excimer laser to treat both eyes simultaneously. By intentionally and personalizedly controlling corneal aberrations according to each patient's visual characteristics, Presbyond allows the brain to integrate images from both eyes, helping patients achieve natural multi-distance vision, maintain contrast and stereoscopic vision, and minimize common visual discomforts.

Innovation in ophthalmology comes not only from technology but also from standardizing clinical practice and personalizing treatment for each patient.
In the field of refractive surgery, new generation laser technologies such as SMILE Pro and SmartSight NOVA continue to yield positive results. Research data presented at the conference showed that flapless surgical methods are not only effective for moderate and severe myopia but can also be extended to include mild myopia.
Research conducted on 98 patients at DND International Eye Hospital - Saigon showed that the SMILE Pro method achieved high refractive accuracy, maintained stable vision, and recorded no surgical complications. Meanwhile, preliminary data from over 1,200 SmartSight NOVA cases shows that this method helps shorten procedure time and supports faster vision recovery.
Experts also emphasized that the choice of surgical method should be based on the corneal characteristics, refractive error, and visual needs of each patient in order to optimize long-term treatment effectiveness.
Regarding cataract treatment, experts affirm the inevitable trend of modern cataract surgery: applying laser technology to standardize the process, increase safety, and aim for stable and sustainable treatment results for patients.
The workshop also updated participants on many advances in the treatment of retinal diseases, including the vitrectomy combined with septal detachment to create a reverse flap for treating macular holes. According to experts, this technique increases the chances of closing macular holes in difficult cases, while also improving visual function for patients.
Furthermore, the use of prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection after intraocular surgery was also discussed by experts. Accordingly, the selection of prophylactic antibiotics should be carefully considered based on each stage of surgery and the patient's risk characteristics, aiming for high antibacterial efficacy. This approach contributes to guiding safe ophthalmological practice, optimizing infection prevention effectiveness, and improving the quality of treatment after intraocular surgery.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nguyen Dang Dung, Director of DND International Eye Hospital, emphasized: "Innovation in ophthalmology comes not only from technology but also from standardizing clinical practice and personalizing treatment for each patient. DND always proactively updates advanced treatment trends worldwide, while building comprehensive treatment procedures and fully implementing modern refractive surgery methods currently applied globally. This gives patients more optimal treatment options."
