From AI applications and online teaching to personalized review sessions, teachers are closely supporting students on their journey to conquer the "exams."

Combining tradition with technology

The physics review session between teacher Nguyen Hai Thanh and his students at Quy Hop 2 High School (Tam Hop, Nghe An ) took place in a focused and open atmosphere. After the class completed the multiple-choice test, Mr. Thanh scanned the answer sheets into the software via his phone. The results were quickly compiled, and each student's incorrect answer was marked in red for the teacher and students to analyze together.

Teacher Thanh said he purchased licenses for two software programs, Young Mix and Azota, at a cost of about 300,000 VND per year to automatically mix test questions and grade papers. Thanks to this, in a single review session, he can complete the entire process: systematizing knowledge, creating test questions, grading in class, and immediately pointing out mistakes, helping students solidify their understanding.

“Students’ exam preparation time is precious, not just for Physics. I always want to enhance their knowledge, but I understand how hard they work. Therefore, how to make each review session effective and optimal is a concern for teachers. Applying technology is an inevitable trend,” the teacher said. In addition, teachers also assign homework via links, grade assignments, and provide online tutoring. The question source is developed by the Physics subject team, closely following the structure of the Ministry of Education and Training's sample exam.

Quỳ Hợp 2 High School has over 90 students registered for the Physics exam. During the final preparation phase, the students were divided into three ability groups to apply appropriate study methods and exam structures. Through analyzing mistakes after each mock exam, the ultimate goal is to improve scores and help students master knowledge from basic to advanced levels.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Hang, head of the Literature department at Le Loi High School (Tan Phu, Nghe An), shared: “The closer it gets to the exam, the more knowledge we want to share. The application of AI has significantly supported personalized teaching.” Open-source essay grading software helps evaluate essays according to specific criteria and suggests improvements for each student, allowing teachers to closely monitor their abilities and adjust teaching methods accordingly.

Class 12K of Thai Hoa High School (Thai Hoa, Nghe An) ranked 18th in the entire province in the mock exam.

Making an effort to excel before the exam.

In the mock exam organized by the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, class 12K of Thai Hoa High School ranked 18th in the province in terms of average score. Le Van Sang achieved 28.25 points in the Mathematics-Physics-Chemistry combination. The male student, who previously won second prize in the provincial excellent student competition in Mathematics and Physics, and scored 109 points in the aptitude test, still maintains a serious study intensity. "The closer it gets to the exam, the more I try to study consistently to maintain a stable mindset and the best test-taking skills," Sang said.

Hoang Thi Van Anh, a student at Tan Ky High School, aims to be admitted to medical school. Through mock exams, her scores have continuously improved, currently exceeding 24 points. Van Anh believes she can increase her score by at least one point before the official exam to maximize her chances of admission.

In supporting her students, Ms. Vo Thi Mai An, a teacher at Tan Ky High School, divides them into groups based on their abilities for closer monitoring. "After each mock exam, teachers discover new mistakes and adjust the review content accordingly," she said.

Due to the mountainous terrain, many students lack the opportunity for extra tutoring, so teachers increase the use of teaching materials and video lectures through Zalo groups. The "90 Days of Determination to Achieve High Results" campaign launched by the Department of Education also provides additional motivation. "The students' results are the product of the teacher's efforts. Seeing them progress and achieve their goals is the greatest joy," she said.

Last academic year, Tan Ky High School ranked 20th in the province in terms of graduation exam results. According to Mr. Luong Van Viet, the Vice Principal, this year the school aims to improve its ranking by 1-2 positions. The school assigns teachers to closely monitor each group, paying particular attention to students at risk of failing, while also creating opportunities for high-achieving students to develop their abilities.

Support from the Education sector

Mr. Vo Van Mai, Deputy Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, informed that the department has shifted from simply directing and inspecting to "accompanying, advising, and supporting" schools. The department has established review advisory teams and implemented a model to ensure quality from input to output.

The province proactively approached the 2018 General Education Program, providing training on developing exam questions in the new format for key personnel to disseminate to teachers throughout the province, and building a question bank. These new formats were also incorporated into periodic tests starting from grades 10 and 11.

The exam preparation plan was developed at the beginning of the school year. The entire province organized three centralized mock exams along with many online exams. After each exam, schools analyzed the results and categorized students to develop appropriate review plans. The application of AI in teaching and the strengthening of professional connections between localities were also promoted.

At the working session on exam preparation, the Permanent Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Pham Ngoc Thuong, highly appreciated the proactive and responsible spirit of the Nghe An Education sector. He emphasized that the outstanding results over the years stemmed from a persistent, scientific, and dedicated process.

"The teachers have helped students overcome the challenges of the exam through a long journey, from early on, from afar, with educational science and dedication," the Deputy Minister affirmed. Many models of guidance, review, organization of mock exams, and data analysis in the province are considered good experiences that need to be replicated nationwide.

Evaluating Nghe An's professional work, Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong stated that many of the province's models for guidance, review, organizing mock exams, and data analysis are valuable experiences that should be studied and replicated nationwide. Organizing multiple mock exams and analyzing results to individualize student review is considered a systematic, scientific, and effective approach.
