Carlos Alcaraz is under immense pressure in the race to retain the world number one ranking, especially after his disappointing performance at the Sunshine Doubles. Entering the clay court season, the Spaniard must defend a significant number of points to avoid being overtaken by Jannik Sinner.
The Monte Carlo Masters thus became a pivotal tournament. In his match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Alcaraz started impressively, needing only 26 minutes to win the first set 6-1.

However, things didn't go as smoothly as expected. In the second set, Etcheverry unexpectedly staged a strong comeback. The Argentinian player capitalized on Alcaraz's mistakes to win 6-4, taking the match to a deciding set.
Pushed into a difficult position, Alcaraz showed the mettle of a defending champion. In the third set, which lasted an hour, he controlled the crucial points better and won 6-3, thus closing out the match after more than two hours of play.
This victory propelled Alcaraz into the fourth round, where he will face Alexander Bublik. Despite areas for improvement, the world number one has demonstrated his mettle and is poised to continue the high-pressure competition ahead.
