Andy Carroll has returned to England to play football. |
The former Liverpool striker became a free agent when he left Bordeaux at the end of last season. Despite receiving attractive offers from France, Italy, and Spain, Carroll returned home to be closer to his family and care for his five children.
The deal took place just hours after the club was acquired by a private investment group from Qatar. Notably, according to Sky Sports, the former England international not only played football but also held a stake in the club.
Carroll jokingly revealed: "My kids think their dad is about to sign a contract with Chelsea. They'll probably be very surprised. But the important thing is that Dagenham is near home, so my children can come to the stadium to watch me play."
Carroll is excited about the role of playing and managing simultaneously: "I've played football for almost 20 years, and I understand how clubs run, big and small. Now I want to contribute that experience. The primary goal is to help the team get promoted. Many other clubs offer much higher salaries, but I chose Dagenham because it's a project that's truly worth getting involved in."
Last year, Carroll earned praise for accepting a significant pay cut to join Bordeaux. He scored 11 goals in 23 games, helping the club finish 4th in the National 2 (French fourth division). Prior to that, Carroll also spent a season playing for Amiens in Ligue 2.
At his peak, Carroll cost Liverpool £35 million to sign from Newcastle in 2011. Off the pitch, Carroll has five children: three with his long-time girlfriend Billi Mucklow and two from a previous relationship. He is currently dating makeup artist Lou Teasdale.
