Sand dredged from Co Co River used to build dams to prevent saltwater intrusion

The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has just issued an official dispatch agreeing on the policy of using dredged sand from the emergency dredging, flood drainage and saltwater intrusion prevention project of Co Co river to construct a temporary dam to prevent saltwater intrusion on Vinh Dien river in 2025.

Dien Ban Town People's Committee and Quang Nam Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board are responsible for coordinating implementation. At the same time, sand sources must be closely monitored, transported in the correct volume, and used for the right purpose to serve the construction of the dam to prevent saltwater intrusion on Vinh Dien River in 2025.

Specifically, the authorities will use about 9,000m3 of sand taken from dredging the Co Co River to construct a temporary dam on the Vinh Dien River. The volume of sand is being gathered at the B3 storage yard, Ha My Trung block, Dien Duong ward. The parties are responsible for fulfilling financial obligations for the volume of minerals allowed to be used in accordance with regulations.

The Management Board of Traffic Construction Investment Projects of Quang Nam Province is responsible for fully updating the remaining sand volume being gathered at the storage sites after handing over the above sand volume to the People's Committee of Dien Ban Town.

According to the People's Committee of Dien Ban town, each year the locality must allocate a budget of 3 to 4 billion VND to implement plans to prevent drought, salinity and maintain freshwater to ensure irrigation water for about 1,855 hectares of agricultural land in the communes and wards in the eastern part of Dien Ban town and the areas of Hoi An city and Da Nang city.

In the past, this dam project has encountered many difficulties because the price of sand on the market is too high. Sand mines in the town have stopped operating, the source of raw materials is unstable, etc., causing the project preparation time to be prolonged, affecting the proactive construction time of the dam.
