Sand dredged from the Co Co River is used to build dams to prevent saltwater intrusion.

The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has just issued a document agreeing in principle to use dredged sand from the Co Co River emergency flood drainage and salinity intrusion prevention project to construct a temporary salinity control dam on the Vinh Dien River in 2025.

The People's Committee of Dien Ban town and the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects of Transportation Works of Quang Nam province are responsible for coordinating the implementation. At the same time, the sand supply must be closely monitored, transported in the correct quantity, and used for the intended purpose to serve the construction of the saltwater intrusion prevention dam on the Vinh Dien River in 2025.

Specifically, authorities will use approximately 9,000 cubic meters of sand extracted from the dredging of the Co Co River to construct a temporary dam on the Vinh Dien River. The sand is currently stockpiled at storage area B3, Ha My Trung neighborhood, Dien Duong ward. All parties are responsible for fulfilling their financial obligations regarding the permitted amount of mineral resources used, in accordance with regulations.

The Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works is responsible for fully updating the remaining volume of sand currently stockpiled at storage sites after handing over the aforementioned sand volume to the Dien Ban Town People's Committee.

According to the People's Committee of Dien Ban town, the locality has to allocate a budget of 3 to 4 billion VND each year to implement drought and salinity control plans and maintain freshwater supply to ensure irrigation water for approximately 1,855 hectares of agricultural land in the eastern communes and wards of Dien Ban town, as well as in Hoi An and Da Nang cities.

Recently, this dam project has faced many difficulties due to the excessively high price of sand on the market. Sand mines in the town have ceased operation, and the supply of raw materials is unstable, causing the project preparation time to be prolonged and affecting the dam construction timeline.
