Willard Asylum in New York (USA) has been largely abandoned since 1995. Initially, this asylum was an impressive hospital with modern facilities for patients, but gradually the facility was no longer used. (Photo source: BP)

Mary King's Close is a historic underground street and one of the best preserved in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was once a bustling street until the city built the Royal Stock Exchange on it in the 1750s, sealing off the alley and underground housing. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, with guides leading visitors through the dark, preserved streets and telling stories about its history.

The city of Pripyat in Ukraine was abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986. Today, the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations controls access to Pripyat, and although radiation levels have dropped significantly since 1986, the city remains abandoned.

Beelitz Heilstätten Hospital in Germany. According to Bored Panda, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler received treatment for his leg wound at this hospital during World War I. After the last patients left in the 1990s, the hospital has been abandoned ever since.

Built in the early 1800s, Lennox Castle was home to a prominent Scottish family until it became a mental hospital in the 1930s. By 2002, the psychiatric hospital, which had been controversial for the harsh conditions its patients endured while there, was closed.

Hashima Island is an abandoned island in Nagasaki, Japan. The island was once a symbol of Japan's rapid industrialization. In 2015, the island was designated a World Heritage Site and has since been open to the public and limited tourism.

The Namibian town of Kolmanskop emerged from the diamond rush of the early 20th century, quickly becoming one of the richest places in Africa. When the diamonds ran out, so did the residents, leaving the town completely abandoned by 1956.

For centuries, the small island of Poveglia (Italy) served as a quarantine station and mass graveyard for plague victims. An estimated 100,000 people were sent there, and the island later became the site of a psychiatric hospital until 1968. After the hospital closed, the island was completely abandoned.
