Ly Van Duc, from Cao Duong village, Yen Thuan commune (Ham Yen district), is currently receiving treatment at the Trauma Surgery Department of the Provincial General Hospital.
Duc is the eldest of three siblings in a poor family in Cao Duong village, Yen Thuan commune. His parents are farmers, but they also care for two orphaned children, the sons of Duc's father's older brother. Outside of school hours, Duc often helps his mother gather wild vegetables to sell to make ends meet. Despite the hardships, the family remains cheerful.
On the afternoon of May 17, 2025, tragedy struck the small family. Duc, while helping his mother with housework, went to use an old washing machine that a friend had given him two months earlier. Because the machine was still on the spin cycle, he opened it to take out clothes to hang them to dry. His sleeve got caught in the machine. His family rushed him to the Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi for emergency surgery. On May 20th, he was transferred back to the Trauma Surgery Department of the Provincial General Hospital for treatment and management of his complex wounds.
Ms. Dang Thi Nhung, Duc's mother, wiped away a tear from her cheek and confided, "I feel so sorry for my son. He's suffered so much since he was little. When he was 5 years old, he lost hearing in his left ear, only able to hear with his right. He's still optimistic and helps his parents with housework. Now that he's in this condition, I don't know what to do. My family has borrowed money from relatives, managing to get 5 million dong for him to go to Hanoi, even though he has health insurance. Both sets of parents are poor and can only help a small amount. Now that he's here, the doctors and nurses are taking good care of him and providing him with free meals. I hope for a miracle to save his hand; my son has a bright future ahead of him."
Comrade Thào Chẩn Choa, Head of Cao Đường village, said: “Lý Văn Đức's family is a poor household in the village. Since the accident, the local village authorities have been encouraging and inquiring about Đức's health. We also hope that kind-hearted people near and far will help Đức so that he can continue his treatment.”
Reportedly, doctors and surgeons in the Trauma Surgery Department of the Provincial General Hospital are actively treating Duc to save his left arm.
