Adapted from a familiar folk tale, "The Magic Pen" marks the first time the husband and wife team Huynh Nhu and Huynh Ngan have taken on the roles of both director and screenwriter. They successfully maintain the familiar "essence" of children's theater at the 5B small theater while containing many profound lessons, conveyed in a simple and humorous way.
The play "The Magic Pen" features a cast including People's Artist My Uyen, Huynh Nhu, Huynh Ngan, Ky Thien Canh, Hong Dao, Huynh Thien Trung, child actors Gia Han, Xuan Nghi, and Thien Kim...
Building on the success of her magic performance in the previous play, Animal Rescue Station , Huynh Nhu continued to captivate young audiences with her "magical transformation" techniques in The Magic Pen.
The story goes that long ago, there was a poor boy named Ma Liang who was given a magic brush by a fairy. He could draw flowers, plants, grass, and a large buffalo to amuse everyone. A wealthy man, hearing of this, tried to steal the brush. He did everything he could to obtain it, but what the greedy man drew shocked everyone... and he learned a lesson he would never forget.
The play "The Magic Pen" made the most of elements from previous children's plays, such as music , dance, and increased interaction with young audiences, especially the magic performance of artist Huynh Nhu. The play is infused with multiple layers of meaning, making it suitable not only for young children but also thought-provoking for anyone who was once a child...
The flowers and food crops of the delta region are vividly personified through the magical brush's spell.
The interactive part of the play drew many young audience members onto the stage.
The performance is distinctly Southern Vietnamese in style.
The story is set in a peaceful countryside, but the class relations element is toned down and emphasized in its celebration of traditional, humanistic values. Compared to previous children's plays, "The Magic Pen " incorporates more Southern Vietnamese elements. Folk songs, rhymes, and traditional opera melodies are playfully adapted to be more relatable to young children.
Huynh Thien Trung, playing the role of the wealthy man, caused a sensation on stage.
The snake mascot made a surprise appearance. The stage space was expanded to increase interaction.
The stage also features an expanded performance space, a feature typically used for experimental plays that require a lot of movement.
People's Artist My Uyen, Director of the 5B Small Stage Theatre, shared: "For me, when staging children's plays, the most important element is the lesson and message. The script for 'The Magic Pen ' has a strong educational message for young children, and it also opens up many creative possibilities for artists regarding their characters."
