According to reporter Laia Cervello Herrero, as soon as Figo entered the VIP area before the Barcelona vs. PSG match, he was booed fiercely by a section of Barcelona fans. Besides whistles and insults, many fans chanted terrible insults directed at the Portuguese football legend.
The chants were repeated almost every five minutes, creating a tense atmosphere in the stands. The cameras focused on Figo, but the former star remained calm and focused on watching the match.
Figo spent five years at Barcelona, scoring 45 goals and providing 91 assists in 249 appearances. However, his relationship with the club soured in the summer of 2000 when he joined arch-rivals Real Madrid for a record fee. Since then, he has been labeled a "traitor" in the eyes of Catalan fans.
The outrage reached its peak in 2002, when Figo returned to Camp Nou wearing a Real Madrid shirt. During that match, an overzealous fan even threw a pig's head onto the pitch at him, creating one of the most shocking images in football history.
The final score at the Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys was a 1-2 defeat for Barcelona against PSG. This also marks the Catalan club's third consecutive home loss against PSG.
