Speaking after accompanying US President Donald Trump to a summit in China, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he expects the Beijing government to soon allow the country to import artificial intelligence (AI) chips from the US.

"The Chinese government has to decide how much it wants to protect its domestic market. My feeling is that over time, the market will open up," Huang shared in an interview with Bloomberg.

Nvidia's CEO stated that he did not directly discuss with Chinese officials the effort to sell the H200 AI chip line to customers in the country, although he acknowledged that the topic had been on the negotiating table between officials from both sides.

"President Trump has had several conversations with leaders, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they decide," said the Nvidia founder.

Previously, according to Reuters, the US Department of Commerce approved the purchase of Nvidia's H200 AI chips by approximately 10 Chinese companies. This is the company's second most powerful AI chip after the H100.

Sources close to the matter said the licensed companies include Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, and JD.com...

Several distributors, such as Lenovo and Foxconn, have also been licensed to distribute the H200 chip in China.

Under US licensing terms, each customer is allowed to purchase a maximum of 75,000 chips. Businesses can purchase directly from Nvidia or through authorized intermediaries.

The identities of the approved customers, along with their relationships with Nvidia and its distributors, have never been disclosed.

Lenovo confirmed to Reuters that the company is "one of the businesses approved to sell H200 chips in China under an export license from Nvidia."

Before the US tightened export controls, Nvidia held approximately 95% of the high-end AI chip market in China. This market also contributed about 13% of the company's revenue.

Billionaire Jensen Huang once estimated that the Chinese AI market alone could reach $50 billion this year.
