Baby THA born in 2015 had swelling on the left cheek, but no pain. The family took the baby to the doctor and received bad news, the baby was diagnosed with a tumor of the left lower jaw.

It is known that the family discovered that the baby had swollen cheeks and took the baby to many large hospitals in the North and South, all of which were diagnosed with a mandibular ameloblastoma.

Hospitals all recommended the treatment of removing the lower left jaw bone. But this major surgery risks causing facial deformity and will affect the life of the 5-year-old girl.

CT scan shows a tumor in the left mandible about 5 cm in diameter.

After a period of investigation, the family took the child to the Department of Dentistry, Hanoi Medical University Hospital for examination. According to Dr. Dang Trieu Hung - the person who directly examined the child, when examining the child's face, the child showed signs of swelling in the left jaw angle, the skin on the tumor was normal and tender to the touch.

Oral examination showed that the baby opened his mouth normally but had a swollen anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Pressing showed signs of plastic and slight pain. The mucosa was normal and there was no discharge. To further confirm the diagnosis, the doctors ordered a CT scan.

Realizing the complexity of the disease, Dr. Hung directly directed and treated the child. The method of cutting the jaw bone caused a large defect, which could lead to disability later.

Therefore, Dr. Hung and his colleagues need to choose the appropriate method to both treat the disease and preserve the function and aesthetics of the child patient. After a period of careful consideration, the doctor decided to operate on the child using the Dredging method.

Fortunately, the surgery was very successful. After 4 surgeries and 4 years of recovery, the baby's jaw bone has now healed and regenerated completely normally, without any complications or sequelae, allowing the baby to live a normal life like any other child.

Dr. Dang Trieu Hung said that jawbone ameloblastoma progresses slowly and can incubate for many years before being detected. The tumor can cause facial and jawbone deformities or cause many adverse conditions for teeth such as loose teeth, a feeling of looseness like a baby tooth about to fall out.

Numbness of the lips and/or chin; the jawbone may be prone to fracture. In rare cases, the tumor may grow large enough to block the airway, causing difficulty breathing, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, or affecting the ability to chew, swallow, or speak.

Complications of ameloblastoma are often due to local invasion or malignant degeneration causing distant metastasis. The disease can cause progressive deformities of the upper and lower jaws, affecting facial function and aesthetics.

The case of THA child is extremely lucky because his parents cared for and treated him promptly. To avoid unfortunate incidents, parents should closely monitor unusual symptoms in their children. Signs such as painless swelling, which seem harmless, can be an indicator of dangerous diseases.

Dr. Dang Trieu Hung - the person who directly examined the child patient.

Doctors at Hanoi Medical University Hospital recommend that when experiencing any unusual symptoms in the cheeks or oral cavity, you should immediately go to a reputable medical facility for timely examination and treatment.

Enamel tumor of the jawbone is a type of tumor originating from the enamel-producing cells. It is a benign tumor but it develops silently and rapidly and can destroy the enamel structure of the bone and turn into a very dangerous malignant tumor.

Enamel tumors are formed by cells that form from the protective enamel lining of the teeth. They differentiate in an abnormal way, not forming enamel but forming an enamel tumor. Doctors have studied this disease and shown that it can appear at any age but is more common in people over 40 and is more common in men than women.

With 20 years of experience working in the field of Dentistry, with in-depth knowledge and outstanding surgical skills, Dr. Dang Trieu Hung recommends to parents that enamel tumors have a high recurrence rate after treatment, even after 10 years, so periodic follow-up examinations are needed every 6 months after enamel tumor treatment.
