Care and pest control on lychee trees

Việt NamViệt Nam24/09/2024

Currently, lychee trees are in the period of developing autumn buds, this stage is favorable for some pests to arise and cause damage. In order to limit the impact of weather and pests on the development of lychee trees, localities and farmers in the province are focusing on implementing appropriate technical measures to care for the trees.

Phu Cu district has more than 1,100 hectares of lychee. According to experienced gardeners in the district, to produce high-yield lychee trees, it is necessary to ensure appropriate nutrition for the trees. Growers need to fertilize and water depending on the age, growth and development of the trees to determine the appropriate fertilizer dosage. Along with that, it is necessary to grasp information about weather developments, regularly monitor crops closely, proactively spray pesticides to prevent and control pests and diseases according to the instructions of the professional sector... At this time, people in the district focus on cleaning the garden, taking care of, preventing and controlling pests and diseases so that the trees can "welcome" autumn buds, accumulate flower buds for the next year's lychee crop.

In Phan Sao Nam commune (Phu Cu), gardeners are actively monitoring the weather and pests to take effective preventive and control measures. Ms. Tran Van Vien, a farmer in Tra Bo village, Phan Sao Nam commune, said: Currently, I am removing weak branches so that the tree can differentiate buds quickly and reduce pests and diseases. When the weather is favorable, I fertilize to help the tree recover, creating momentum for the next crop. This is also the time when lychee trees are susceptible to pests such as inchworms, leaf rollers, velvet spiders, and canker disease, so I focus on spraying pesticides to prevent and control them.

Comrade Le Xuan Mai, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Cu district, said: Every year, the district coordinates with localities to regularly organize training conferences for people on techniques for planting and caring for lychee trees, instructing farmers to apply scientific and technical advances, intensive farming measures to increase productivity and fruit quality... Currently, on lychee trees, pests and diseases are arising and causing damage. To achieve comprehensive results, professional staff and gardeners need to regularly check fields and gardens, accurately estimate and forecast the time of occurrence and the level of damage caused by pests and diseases; prevent and control pests and diseases according to the "4 rights" principle...

In recent days, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, many lychee areas in low-lying areas have been locally flooded. In areas affected by waterlogging, growers need to clean up the remaining branches and leaves; dig trenches along the rows of trees outside the canopy to increase the tree's ability to absorb oxygen, quickly releasing toxic gases in the soil. After the topsoil in the garden is dry and the trees have fully recovered, apply additional microbial fertilizers and foliar fertilizers with high growth regulators to help the trees recover quickly; hoe the entire area under the canopy before fertilizing so that the trees can quickly absorb and increase the effectiveness of the fertilizer. At the same time, mound up the roots of trees with loose roots, water with fungicides or biological preparations to fight fungi to limit the invasion of fungi... Gardeners regularly monitor and prevent and control pests and diseases that harm trees to protect the autumn shoots and reduce the density of pests and diseases over the winter.

Mr. Doan Van Hieu, Director of Hung Yen Lychee Cooperative in Da Loc Commune (An Thi) said: During the prolonged rainy season, I and other lychee growers focused on draining water, digging ditches, and raising beds to limit flooding. During this period, I hired more than 10 workers to prune broken branches, branches growing inside the trunk, clean the garden, and fertilize the trees, stimulating the trees to regenerate roots and develop new shoots. When the trees sprout new shoots, we monitor them to prevent and control pests in a timely manner. With experience and the application of scientific and technical measures in intensive lychee cultivation, members of the cooperative have been proactive in flowering and fruiting of lychee trees. Thanks to that, every year the lychee growing areas bear fruit with good quality.

Up to now, the whole province has about 1,300 hectares of lychee. In order for the lychee trees to grow well, creating a premise for the next year's lychee crop, units and professional staff regularly monitor the growth process of the plants to promptly guide farmers on how to prevent and control pests and diseases effectively and safely. At the same time, it is recommended that lychee growers focus on cleaning and sanitizing the fields and gardens to create an airy canopy for the trees, reducing the possibility of pests and diseases, focusing on nutrients to nourish the autumn shoots; spraying foliar fertilizers combined with growth stimulants to promote the development of autumn shoots; removing undergrowth, overgrowth, diseased branches... For healthy trees with many autumn shoots, only leave 1 to 2 large, healthy autumn shoots on each branch, and prune the rest to focus on nutrients to nourish the shoots. For trees with poor growth and development, growers should add composted organic fertilizer or soaked manure, phosphate fertilizer to supplement watering the trees...
