Last year, the health sector achieved 3/3 health targets assigned by the Provincial People's Council and People's Committee; 12/12 basic health targets. The whole sector proactively carried out preventive health work well, controlled local epidemics well, forecasted early, and prevented new epidemics from arising. Promoted the development of technical expertise, such as: Cerebrovascular intervention, cardiovascular intervention, open heart surgery, pelvic organ prolapse graft surgery in obstetrics and gynecology, neonatal resuscitation and survival of children 800gr - 1kg... In particular, improved the quality of the emergency and stroke treatment network, including 4 hospitals certified by the World Stroke Association (1 diamond, 1 gold, 2 platinum). Put into operation the Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation General Hospital, meeting the health care needs of the people.
An Giang health sector is also a typical example of a pioneer in organizing and effectively implementing centralized bidding for the purchase of medical supplies, chemicals, biological products, drugs and medical equipment. Taking advantage of state budget capital and preferential loans, focusing on investing in facilities and medical equipment for affiliated health units, meeting the needs of medical examination and treatment for people. Consolidating and improving the quality of grassroots health activities according to the principles of family medicine. Building an Intelligent Operation Center (IOC) for the health sector. An Giang Central General Hospital continues to affirm its role as a Grade I hospital, leading in the medical field of the province and neighboring areas. In 2024, despite facing many challenges in terms of human resources, finance, delays in bidding for drugs and medical supplies, as well as increasing demands from the people, the hospital still achieved many outstanding achievements thanks to the strong direction of the Party Committee, Board of Directors and the continuous efforts of all cadres, civil servants and employees.
Dr. Nguyen Duy Tan (Director of An Giang Central General Hospital) said: “As one of the leading units in the province in terms of the number of technical services applied in medical examination and treatment of all specialties, the successful treatment of difficult cases always has a high rate. In recent years, the hospital has continuously made many breakthroughs in the fields of high-tech, specialized treatment, such as: Endoscopic surgery, internal medicine treatment in emergency, cardiology, interventional cardiology... That success is thanks to the hospital having built a complete medical examination and treatment system with spacious facilities, modern machinery and equipment. Especially the team of highly qualified human resources, quickly absorbing advanced medical techniques, dedicated to the profession, constantly preserving and promoting the medical ethics of physicians”.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Hien (Director of the Department of Health) affirmed that the An Giang health sector has achieved important steps in improving the quality of health care for the people, improving the health system and promptly responding to public health issues; he believes that the entire health sector of the province will have many breakthrough developments in the coming time.
According to Vice Chairwoman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy, besides the achievements, the health sector still has some difficulties and limitations: The shortage of highly qualified medical personnel at the grassroots level, the need to invest in high-value medical equipment such as DSA, MRI, CT, artificial kidney system... The grassroots medical facilities are degraded, while the provincial budget is limited, the rate of population participating in health insurance is not sustainable due to the increase in health insurance premiums, and the number of unemployed workers is increasing...
In 2025, to achieve health targets, Vice Chairwoman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy suggested that the health sector needs to be flexible, proactive, and coordinate urgently to reorganize district-level health centers under the management of district-level People's Committees; reorganize the Department of Health. Promote the implementation of preventive medicine, control cross-border epidemics, ensure food safety and hygiene; focus on population and development work, maternal and child health care; improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, management capacity, and develop the family doctor model. Strengthen training, improve professional qualifications and medical ethics, and take patients as the center.
Along with that, implement many solutions to attract people to participate in voluntary health insurance, advise the Provincial People's Committee to submit to the Provincial People's Council on supporting health insurance premiums for some disadvantaged subjects. Take advantage of the State budget, preferential loans (ODA) to invest in modern medical facilities and equipment for medical units in the direction of specialized development at the provincial level and universalization at the grassroots level. Strengthen communication and education to improve medical ethics, aiming to build a humane medical environment, where patients are always respected and cared for attentively.
