VietNamNetVietNamNet26/11/2023

According to assessments, short circuits in motorcycle batteries while the vehicle is not in operation are rare. However, there have been several fires related to this cause, resulting in very serious consequences for both people and property.

One of the most serious fires involving burning motorcycle batteries occurred in a mini-apartment building in Khuong Dinh ward (Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi ).

The fire resulted in 56 deaths and 37 injuries. Through investigation, authorities determined that the cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit in the battery wiring of the scooter.

Numerous motorbikes were burned to ashes in the fire at the mini-apartment building.

Previously, on April 21, 2022, a serious fire also occurred in Dong Da district, Hanoi. The fire claimed the lives of 5 people. The cause of the fire also stemmed from a short circuit in the battery of a scooter parked on the first floor.

Meanwhile, in Ho Chi Minh City, on March 23, 2018, a major fire broke out at the Carina apartment building in District 8, killing 13 people and injuring 28. Authorities determined that the fire originated from a short circuit in a motorcycle battery.

According to fire safety experts, incidents involving motorcycle battery fires are rare, but not impossible. The main causes are short circuits between the positive and negative terminals of the battery, electrical overload, and sparks caused by friction between non-metallic materials.

How to prevent short circuits in motorcycle batteries?

Motorcycle battery short circuits leading to fires and explosions are relatively rare, but they have occurred and resulted in very serious consequences. The risk of fire and explosion related to motorcycle battery short circuits can occur at any time, on any motorcycle.

Therefore, motorcycle users need to have their motorcycles regularly serviced at reputable establishments to minimize this risk.

According to fire safety experts, many motorbike users do not pay attention to the schedule of regular vehicle inspections and maintenance, only taking their vehicles for repair when they experience malfunctions.

According to motorcycle manufacturers, the average lifespan of a motorcycle battery is about 1.5-2 years. Batteries used beyond this time pose a high risk of fire and explosion.

Furthermore, fire safety experts also advise against modifying vehicles or installing additional accessories and gadgets. These products are often of unknown origin, do not guarantee quality, and may affect the vehicle's operation and safety, leading to a risk of short circuits and fires.

Fire safety experts also noted that vehicle owners should be wary of animals such as dogs, cats, or especially rats that may gnaw on electrical wires. This is also one of the causes that can lead to damage and fire in motorcycle batteries.

In addition, when storing motorcycles indoors, owners should avoid placing them too close to flammable materials to prevent potential risks.
