ChatGPT reaches 300 million weekly users

DNVN - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently revealed that the artificial intelligence application ChatGPT now has over 300 million weekly users, up from 200 million users at the end of August 2024.

Known as one of the world's most advanced artificial intelligences, ChatGPT is a chatbot capable of answering users' questions coherently on any topic. Since its launch, many users have switched to chatting directly with ChatGPT to look up information instead of using Google. With its multidisciplinary understanding, this tool can provide answers in just seconds.

Since late 2022, ChatGPT has sparked a wave of AI-generated usage and quickly reached 100 million weekly users in early 2023. From there, it took the platform over a year to reach 200 million users and just three more months to hit its current 300 million mark.

Experts believe this growth is driven by OpenAI attracting significant investment from leading technology companies and an increasing number of companies using the platform. According to Sam Altman, OpenAI's next goal is to reach 1 billion weekly active users next year.

To achieve this ambition, OpenAI is facing fierce competition from rivals such as Amazon-backed Anthropic AI and Elon Musk's xAI. Altman has called xAI a "formidable competitor." At the same time, OpenAI must also contend with giants like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon in a nascent AI market projected to reach $1 trillion in the next decade.

On December 3rd, OpenAI announced the appointment of Kate Rouch, former Chief Marketing Officer of Coinbase, as the company's first Chief Marketing Officer. This move underscores plans to ramp up marketing efforts to expand its user base. Prior to this, in October, OpenAI launched its ChatGPT search feature to directly compete with Google, Microsoft Bing, and Perplexity AI.

Sam Altman also spoke out to refute the accusation that OpenAI prohibits investors from funding its competitors. He asserted that investors are not allowed access to OpenAI's internal information, including its development roadmap and other critical documents.
