Hotel fire in India's capital kills at least 21 people.

VTV.vn - At least 21 people were killed in a fire at a hotel in the Indian capital New Delhi on June 3.

Indian police said the hotel fire was one of the worst fires in the capital New Delhi in recent years.

"We are deeply saddened to receive the news that 21 people have died in this tragic hotel fire," Indian police said in a press release, adding that more than 40 others were rescued.

The hotel is located in Malviya Nagar, south of New Delhi. This residential area is densely populated and popular with students and young professionals.

"According to reports, there is a restaurant operating on the ground floor of the hotel building, and it is highly likely that the fire is related to that restaurant," local government official Jitendra Kumar told reporters.

Television footage showed a building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing and its facade blackened, as onlookers watched from a nearby alley. Several people trapped inside were seen clinging to windows and screaming for help as fire and smoke spread throughout parts of the building. Two people jumped from upper floors to escape.

According to video footage from the scene, firefighters are attempting to extinguish the blaze. Local residents are also participating in the rescue effort, helping to evacuate those trapped inside and bringing some injured people to safety. Local media reported that some of the victims were foreigners who had come to India for medical treatment.

The fire has been extinguished, but the cause of the hotel blaze remains unclear. Jitendra Kumar, a senior New Delhi city administrator, said several bodies had been found at the scene.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims who died and offered his deepest sympathies to the families of those who perished, while also wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

An announcement from the Indian Prime Minister's Office stated that the families of the victims would receive 200,000 Rupees (US$2,088) in financial assistance.

Fires are a common occurrence in India, where building codes and safety regulations are often ignored by contractors and residents.
