The national consumer price index in May 2025 increased by 0.16%

The above information was announced by the General Statistics Office on the morning of June 6.

On average, in the first 5 months of 2025, CPI increased by 3.21% over the same period last year; while core inflation increased by 3.10%.

CPI in May increased by 0.16% compared to the previous month mainly due to increases in prices of house rent, home maintenance materials, electricity and eating out.

The price index of 10 groups of goods and services increased. Of which, the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group increased by 0.73% (increasing the overall CPI by 0.14 percentage points), mainly due to price increases in some items, such as the price of housing maintenance materials increased by 1.2%; house rental price increased by 0.64%; household electricity price increased by 0.84%; household water price increased by 1%. In contrast, the price of kerosene decreased by 3.09% due to the impact of price adjustments during the month.

The group of other goods and services increased by 0.43%, mainly concentrated in the jewelry group which increased by 10.64% according to domestic and world gold prices; body care products increased by 0.52%; handbags, suitcases, wallets increased by 0.48%; watch and jewelry repair increased by 0.40%...

The culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.28%. Of which, package tourism increased by 1.09% (domestic tourism increased by 1.24%; international tourism increased by 0.67%); hotels increased by 1.36%; guesthouses increased by 0.50%; sports venue rental tickets increased by 0.51%; sports equipment increased by 0.15%. On the contrary, prices of ornamental plants and flowers decreased by 1.61%; musical instruments decreased by 0.02%.

The post and telecommunications group increased by 0.21%; the household equipment and appliances group increased by 0.19%; and the beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.14% due to increased production costs and consumer demand.

The garment, hat and footwear group increased by 0.05%; the food and catering services group increased by 0.03%; the medicine and medical services group increased by 0.02%; theeducation group increased by 0.01%, of which the price of stationery increased by 0.12%.

The transportation group alone decreased by 0.42%, mainly due to a 2.33% decrease in diesel price index and a 1.2% decrease in gasoline price index.

Core inflation in May 2025 increased by 0.33% over the previous month and by 3.33% over the same period last year.

On average, in the first 5 months of 2025, core inflation increased by 3.1% over the same period last year, lower than the 3.21% increase in the average CPI, mainly due to the prices of food, foodstuffs, electricity, and medical services, which are factors that increase the CPI but are excluded from the list of core inflation calculations.

Domestic gold prices fluctuate in the same direction as world gold prices. The gold price index in May increased by 10.47% compared to the previous month; increased by 45.95% compared to the same period last year; increased by 35.25% compared to December 2024; on average in the first five months of 2025, the gold price index increased by 35.37%.

USD price index in May increased by 2.69% over the same period last year; increased by 2.59% over December 2024; average increase in the first five months of 2025 by 3.35%.
