Spain became the second team to qualify for the Round of 16 of EURO 2024, after hosts Germany. In the early hours of June 21st, La Roja defeated Italy 1-0.
Luis de la Fuente's men outplayed the defending champions, unleashing a total of 20 shots. However, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was outstanding, or the net denied the Italian players, the decisive goal came from an Italian defender, Riccardo Calafiori.
The 22-year-old Bologna center-back became the fifth player to score an own goal at EURO 2024. Despite being the second team to qualify for the knockout stage, Spain is the only team yet to concede a goal after two matches (scoring four), and is also the first team to be guaranteed first place in their group.
While Spain continued to play convincingly, England were mired in criticism. Gareth Southgate's team took the lead against Denmark but then lost control of the game and allowed their opponents to equalize.
Even though Phil Foden's long-range shot hit the post, Denmark deserved to win in terms of chances instead of just getting one point. England were lucky to avoid defeat, and although they still top the group, the pressure on Southgate is increasing.
In the earliest match, also tied 1-1, Slovenia and Serbia delivered a dramatic and captivating performance. A battle of physical strength from start to finish, a sound tactical approach that gave Slovenia the lead, while the Serbian coaching staff made chaotic substitutions in a state of apparent helplessness.
However, right at the very last second of the 5 minutes of added time, Luka Jovic saved Serbia, salvaging a point and keeping their hopes alive of competing for third place.
