According to a recent article published by Gadget Hacks, sensitive personal data such as credit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers, passwords... located under this black layer can be revealed through a small trick on an iPhone.
Specifically, this method exploits the highlighter feature in photo editing software.
When we use this pen to highlight sensitive information, the fact is that every time you swipe with your finger, the pen creates a transparent layer over the text, highlighting it in a different way (even when the opacity is at 100% and nothing is visible to the naked eye).
Others can remove these transparent layers on iPhone by following below method.
Open the blacked out photo in the Photos app and tap Edit in the upper-right corner to open the image editor.
At the bottom of the screen are the tools to remove the highlighter, try adjusting Brilliance, Shadows, Brightness to 100% and see what happens.
If nothing appears, try adjusting the Exposure, Highlights, Contrast to 100%.
Next you need to zoom in on the area you want to see. Although it is not very clear, the information there can be seen.
Gadget Hacks also suggests that if sending a screenshot is necessary, we can safely black out the following in the Photos editor itself:
1. If you're still highlighting with a highlighter, instead of just tapping and swiping back and forth until everything "disappears," lift your finger off the screen before swiping again. This will make the highlights heavier and less visible with the above trick.
2. Instead of a highlighter, use the pen tool. When set to 100% opacity, a layer of any color pen is enough to hide what's underneath from prying eyes and image editing tools.
3. You can use the Shape Tool by clicking the (+) sign at the bottom right and selecting one of the available shapes. Place it over the information you want to hide, then click the icon at the bottom left to select the blackout option.
