Chicharito returns to the World Cup in a completely new role. |
After four months out of action, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez officially returns to the world's biggest football stage in a different way.
Fox Sports has confirmed that the former Manchester United striker will join the commentary team at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in his home country of Mexico.
At 37, Hernandez will join a panel of experts alongside big names like Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. This marks his first foray into television, transitioning from the football field to match analysis.
"I used to do everything with my feet, now it's with my voice," Hernandez shared. He admitted he's a "newcomer" in this field and can't promise anything yet, but is ready to offer a positive perspective and the necessary honesty.
Despite a temporary shift in direction, Hernandez has no intention of retiring. He remains Mexico's all-time leading scorer with 52 goals in 109 appearances, a record that will be difficult to break for many years to come.
Chicharito's career spanned several major clubs. He joined Manchester United in 2010, winning two Premier League titles. He then played for Real Madrid on loan, before moving to Bayer Leverkusen and returning to England to play for West Ham.
After a decade playing in Europe and a stint at LA Galaxy, Hernandez returned to Chivas in early 2024. However, declining form and fitness issues meant he only scored 4 goals in 41 games before his contract was terminated in December 2025.
The 2026 World Cup holds special significance for Hernandez. He featured in the opening match of 2010 against South Africa and is now continuing his association with the national team in a different role.
At the 2026 World Cup, Mexico is in Group A along with South Africa, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. With the home advantage, Hernandez believes the team can advance from the group stage and go further.
