Hanoi – On the morning of October 11th, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam announced the launch of the News Campaign, encouraging young people to raise awareness about fake news and create positive content for the community.

The press conference announcing the News Campaign, organized by the Department of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information and VnExpress newspaper, was attended by leaders from the Ministry of Information and Communications , TikTok Vietnam, and many content creators on social media platforms.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications welcomed the "Anti-Fake News" campaign initiative, which aims to build a positive online environment for over 80 million Vietnamese people who use the internet daily.

According to Mr. Lam, many people now view the internet as their second life, creating content that influences the community. Simultaneously, cross-border social media platforms are increasingly developing in Vietnam, allowing users to post content for free and generate advertising revenue. This also contributes to the increase in fake news and misinformation.

"The fake news situation is evolving in many new ways, and we cannot simply wait; we must have faith in those who have a positive influence on social media," Mr. Lam said.

From the perspective of regulatory agencies, they face and handle numerous issues in cyberspace daily to protect and help people have a safe and healthy digital ecosystem. "We realize that this shouldn't be done alone, and there's no reason for state agencies to do it alone; we must mobilize progressive resources and positive energy from content creators," Deputy Minister Lam emphasized.

According to the Ministry's leadership, the current shift by cross-border network operators to a model where users are charged for ad-free content shows a positive sign in the fight against fake news and harmful information. Content creators who want to earn money also need to change their service perspective. This includes fulfilling their social responsibility and collaborating with government agencies to spread positive values and policies to the public in the most appropriate way.

Mr. Lam hopes that the News Campaign will be a healthy platform, encouraging many people to create positive content that brings shared value to the community.

At the event, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information Le Quang Tu Do shared more about the Anti-Fake News message and the series of activities of the News Campaign.

According to Mr. Do, fake news is a problem that everyone has encountered. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to be able to distinguish between real and fake news in the "sea" of information on social media and avoid negative consequences.

Besides creating a healthy playing field for digital creators, the Department aims to honor positive content creators on social media. "Content creation is a very new profession in Vietnam, but it's fragmented. Some choose to create clean content, while a significant number choose to create dirty content to quickly gain fame and money," Mr. Do said, conveying the message: content creators should choose to create useful content to gain community support and develop their careers in the long term.

The News Campaign ran from February 10th to November 15th, with key activities including: the "Anti Fake News" content creation contest on TikTok; a program to enhance Vietnamese online culture; and numerous other activities and media publications widely shared across all social media platforms.

Among these, the "Anti Fake News" contest, co-organized by TikTok, aims to create a platform for young people to create content and convey messages against fake news and misinformation online.

"Any platform entering Vietnam and making money from Vietnamese people must contribute to the community. The Anti-Fake News contest is one of the activities demonstrating TikTok's commitment to this," Mr. Tu Do shared about TikTok's participation.

The competition consists of three main themes: Firstly, contestants can perform the "Anti Fake News" dance, with lyrics rewritten by musician Bui Cong Nam based on the song " If You Don't Keep What You Have, Don't Look for It When You Lose It. " At the press conference, the organizers announced the theme song and sample dance.

Secondly, contestants can also sing the competition's theme song or compose and write their own songs based on the theme "Anti Fake News".

Thirdly, content creators can choose to tell stories or act out scenarios about how to handle situations where they or those around them encounter the following types of information: untrue, unverified, or misinterpreted information that causes misunderstandings and negatively impacts the honor, dignity, and reputation of individuals or organizations; fraudulent information that misleads the community and leads to negative consequences; and the ethics of media professionals when producing information online.

The competition consists of two rounds: the preliminary round and the final round. The first round takes place from September 28th to October 28th. The organizers will award prizes to nearly 20 creators with impressive entries. The total prize value is up to 150 million VND.

To date, the hashtag #antifakenews on TikTok has garnered 592,000 videos and attracted over two billion views in less than a month since its launch.

Throughout the competition, the campaign's image ambassador, Luong Thuy Linh - Miss World Vietnam 2019, has been a key figure. She also served as a judge for the "Anti Fake News" contest and participated in other community events of the campaign.
