A long legal battle has ended in victory for Chelsea star Cole Palmer. The England midfielder has officially been granted a trademark for his nickname and signature celebration, "Cold Palmer". And it opens up a range of unique products, from children's toys to spirits.
Previously, Cole Palmer had filed a trademark application with the Government Intellectual Property Office (IPO) from November 2024. However, this process was hindered by an unexpected competitor, a famous French wine company.
Chateau Palmer, a historic vineyard in the Margaux region of Bordeaux in south-west France – which sells bottles costing up to £750 – had strongly opposed Palmer’s original application.
The winery argued that commercializing the name "Cold Palmer" would damage and threaten its brand image. After the litigation, it was reported that Chateau Palmer had won an initial victory, forcing Palmer's legal team to revise its IPO documents.
To ease the dispute, Palmer is said to have amended his filing to remove any reference to wine. However, his brand still includes a variety of other alcoholic drinks, including spirits and alcoholic energy drinks.
A few weeks after the revisions, Palmer was officially granted a patent for the "Cold Palmer" brand by IPO.
This means that no individual or organization can use his nickname "Cold" for commercial purposes without the Chelsea star's permission. The patent is valid until November 2034 and can be renewed free of charge.
The products that Palmer plans to sell to the market are extremely diverse, including: personal items such as soap, bath salts, razor blades, perfume, teddy bears, fireworks, soft drinks, diet drinks, etc.
Sebastian Stewart, a lawyer at Bristows LLP, says that broad trademark registration is a common strategy: "They often file applications for goods and services in as many categories as possible, which gives you the option to put your brand on any future items."
Cole Palmer first performed the 'Cold Palmer' celebration - placing his hands on his shoulders and doing a shiver - in December 2023. Palmer revealed that the move was inspired by his Manchester City academy friend Morgan Rogers. And it has now become his personal trademark.
