Accordingly, the first AI chip designed by OpenAI, expected to be manufactured at TSMC using the 3nm process, is nearing design completion and will be sent for trial production in the next few months.

OpenAI aims to mass-produce AI chips by 2026. The process of sending designs to factories will cost tens of millions of dollars and take approximately six months to complete. If it fails, OpenAI will have to check for errors and repeat the process.
If the design submission process is successful, OpenAI could test its alternative to Nvidia chips later this year. Tech experts believe OpenAI has made rapid progress, as this process can take years compared to other chip designers.
TSMC will manufacture this chip using a 3nm process, featuring a popular systolic matrix architecture with high-bandwidth memory, currently also used by Nvidia. While OpenAI's chip is capable of both training and operating models, it is expected to be deployed in a limited role within the company's infrastructure.
