According to a TTXVN correspondent in Jakarta, the Indonesian magazine TEMPO published an analysis stating that the artificial intelligence company OpenAI is showing great ambition in the race to innovate AI technology. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, confirmed that the company has now begun developing hardware specifically for AI programs, which previously only existed as software like ChatGPT.
Altman clarified that the prototype of this device was perfected with the design imprint of Jony Ive – a legend who was behind the iPhone and iPod during Apple's golden age. Ive's involvement makes the project particularly noteworthy.
At the recent Emerson Collective Demo Day event, Altman and designer Ive stated that the new device is expected to launch in less than two years, around the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027.
The Chinese website Gizmochina describes the product as neither a smartphone nor an augmented reality (AR) headset, but rather pursuing the philosophy of "calm computing"—technology that is subtly present and causes minimal disruption. Leaked information suggests the device has no screen and is extremely small, like an iPod Shuffle, allowing users to slip it into their pocket and carry it with them at all times.
Despite its modest size, the device's internal technology is considered superior. It interacts entirely through voice commands, relying on AI's natural language comprehension capabilities.
In addition, it is equipped with a high-sensitivity camera and microphone, capable of capturing ambient images and sounds in real time. In other words, this is an effort to bring AI assistants into daily life in the most seamless way possible, without the need for a screen.
OpenAI's commitment is evident in its aggressive recruitment strategy. The company is said to have "recruited" dozens of engineers and designers who previously worked for Apple, including Tang Tan, a former iPhone product design leader, and Evans Hankey.
However, the ambition to transition from software to hardware is not easy. History has recorded numerous failures of AI companies and purely software technology companies when venturing into device manufacturing.
Based on recent analysis and leaks, if OpenAI can truly combine ChatGPT's intelligence with Ive's design expertise, the upcoming miniature AI device could very well become the new standard for personal computing in the post-smartphone era.
