On December 11, the US government announced an agreement with allies to secure the supply chain of minerals essential for artificial intelligence (AI) development, with the goal of protecting this crucial resource.
The agreement, signed by the Trump administration with key allies in the Asia- Pacific region including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Australia, along with Israel, is called “Pax Silica” (Latin for peace and silicon – a crucial material in the AI industry) and aims to secure the supply chain.
The US State Department explained that Pax Silica is a new form of international partnership aimed at bringing together countries with the world's most advanced technology companies to unlock the economic potential of the new AI era. Several other countries are expected to join in the future, but it is not yet clear which ones.
The agreement was signed just days after President Trump announced he would allow the export of Nvidia's advanced AI chips to China, reversing a decision by his predecessor Joe Biden, who had expressed national security concerns about sharing this crucial technology.
China currently holds the world's leading position in the supply of rare earth elements, accounting for nearly 70% of the total production of these resources.
