- Proactively plan for the summer-autumn rice crop.
- Farmers take the initiative in the summer-autumn crop season.
According to the planting schedule and variety structure guidelines for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tran Van Thoi district, this year the district will have two planting periods. Period 1: from April 20th to May 10th, before the rainy season truly begins; planting areas are high-lying hilly areas; the sowing method is mainly dry sowing, using seeds that have not been soaked or germinated, or improved sowing with seeds that have been soaked and germinated until they sprout. Period 2: from May 10th to June 20th, for areas with average or low-lying terrain; sowing methods include direct sowing and germination, using seeds that have been soaked or germinated for 25-30 hours, or improved sowing with seeds that have been soaked and germinated until they sprout.
Farmers in Tran Van Thoi town are speeding up the plowing process, preparing for the new crop season.
Regarding rice varieties, farmers should choose Group A rice varieties that meet certification standards, are resistant to pests and diseases, saline and acidic soils, have high yield and quality, are suitable for local farming conditions, and meet the needs of the domestic and export markets. Some high-quality rice varieties that can be chosen include: OM18, OM5451, OS20, HP1, Camau1, Huong Chau 6...; and specialty fragrant rice varieties: ST24, ST25, Dai Thom 8, Thom RVT...
According to the plan, this year's summer-autumn rice crop in the district will cover more than 28,950 hectares. To date, farmers have prepared over 20,500 hectares (including plowing and tilling). Mr. Vo Thanh Men, Head of the Farmers' Association in Kinh Tu hamlet, Khanh Loc commune, said: "Currently, farmers in the hamlet have prepared over 90% of the land. Due to the prolonged rainy season this year, those who can plow are doing so, while those who can't are still tilling the soil. It is expected that farmers will begin planting around April 20th."
Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi, from Kinh Tu hamlet, informed: "In previous years, farmers here used dry sowing for the summer-autumn rice crop. This year, however, most farmers are tilling the land, so dry sowing is not possible, and they have to switch to dry sowing. Currently, I have prepared enough rice seeds and various fertilizers and pesticides. When the planting season arrives, I will pump water to flood the fields, then plow the land again to level it before sowing. From what I've learned, most farmers here are choosing the HP1 variety for sowing this year."
For this year's summer-autumn crop, Mr. Nguyen Minh Kha, from Rach Ruong C hamlet, Khanh Loc commune, plans to sow his rice around the end of April. "I finished plowing the land about a month ago. If the weather is favorable then, I'll do dry sowing; otherwise, I'll sow on the slopes to ensure a good harvest. Choosing to sow on the slopes requires pumping water to plow the land, which adds to the cost, but it's advantageous because it eliminates weeds and avoids heavy rain," Mr. Kha explained.
According to Mr. Huynh Van Tien from Kinh Tu hamlet, Khanh Loc commune, farmers may face obstacles in planting the upcoming summer-autumn rice crop because plowing is not possible this year. Some households have to dry sow, while others have to sow on the ground. This uneven planting will make pest and disease control more difficult, and the cost of pumping water for production will also be higher.
Despite facing obstacles in land preparation for the new crop season, farmers in Tran Van Thoi district have now prepared their production plans and agricultural supplies, and will proceed with planting simultaneously when the planting season arrives.
