Teaching children to swim is a crucial measure in preventing drowning.

Most recently, on May 31st, a tragic drowning incident occurred in Song Luy commune, Lam Dong province, resulting in the death of a 12th-grade student named PST (born in 2008, residing in Song Luy commune). According to local authorities, the victim was swimming in the river with a group of friends when the accident happened. Upon discovering the incident, authorities and local residents promptly launched a large-scale search operation. After two days of intensive searching, the victim was found on the morning of June 2nd. This incident serves as a further warning about the dangers of swimming and playing in natural rivers, streams, and lakes.

Earlier, on May 28th, a drowning incident also occurred when NHPT (born in 2013, residing in Phu Thuy ward) went swimming at Doi Duong beach in Phan Thiet ward with a group of friends and drowned. Authorities mobilized resources and local residents to organize a search. By early afternoon on May 29th, the body of T. was found in the Doi Duong beach area.

Since the beginning of 2026, Lam Dong province has continuously experienced cases of child drowning, especially in remote areas. Besides subjective causes such as children not knowing how to swim and lacking drowning prevention skills, the lack of playgrounds and beneficial recreational activities for children also contributes to the increased risk of drowning. Many children have resorted to playing in unsafe ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, or beaches, leading to tragic accidents.

Facing the increased risk of accidents, injuries, and drowning among children during the summer and rainy season of 2026, the People's Committee of Lam Dong province has directed relevant departments and localities to implement comprehensive solutions to ensure the safety of children in the area. Accordingly, units will continue to promote awareness campaigns among families, schools, and communities on accident and injury prevention, especially drowning among children. Localities are required to review and address areas with potential risks such as ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, water pits, and water storage facilities; and to install warning signs, fences, and increase supervision at dangerous locations.

Local authorities and units are organizing safe summer activities, creating opportunities for children to learn to swim, equipping them with water safety skills and disaster response skills. In addition, communes, wards, and special zones are proactively developing plans to ensure the safety of children in areas at risk of natural disasters, floods, and landslides; providing timely support to families with children in distress; and strengthening inspections and monitoring of the implementation of regulations on child protection.

To create a healthy and enriching environment for children, various levels of government and localities in Lam Dong province have organized many diverse and attractive summer activities. The opening event for the 2026 summer activities is the Summer Opening Ceremony, Children's Olympic Day, and the launch of a nationwide swimming training program to prevent child drowning, organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This program not only launches summer activities throughout the province but also spreads the message of working together to care for, protect, and create conditions for children to learn and play in a safe and friendly environment.

In addition, extracurricular classes such as drawing, dancing, singing, swimming, football, badminton, and musical instruments are regularly organized, creating many opportunities for children to play during the summer, providing an environment for them to interact, learn, and develop themselves.
