Rats that were damaging the rice crops were caught in traps set by the villagers.
Many spring rice crops, currently in the tillering and heading stages, are being severely damaged by rats, with densities ranging from 3-5 rats/ m² , and in some areas up to 7-8 rats/ m² , posing a serious threat to spring crop yield and production. Forecasts indicate that rat populations will continue to grow rapidly and cause widespread damage due to the high rat population carried over from the 2023 crop, combined with abundant food sources and favorable habitats.
In response to this situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed specialized units, in coordination with mass organizations, to launch a campaign to eradicate rats; organizing community rat eradication teams and groups in concentrated campaigns during periods when rats are not yet breeding, before and after production seasons, or during floods when rats are still clustered together.
Simultaneously, organize rat extermination in fields, near residential areas, along irrigation ditches, and on abandoned land. Limit the use of plastic sheeting to enclose small fields to protect the environment; absolutely do not use electricity or banned pesticides, or pesticides not on the list of permitted pesticides in Vietnam, to exterminate rats.
