Hanoi Police Club lost to Buriram, Quang Hai criticized the referee

With a thrilling victory over Hanoi Police Club, Buriram won the Southeast Asian championship.

Speaking on Thai television after the match, midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai expressed his dissatisfaction with the decisions of the referee: "We fought with all our might today, and that is what I am most proud of. However, I am not satisfied with the referee's decisions, especially the situations in the second half.

In many controversial situations, the referee often blew the whistle in our unfavorable direction. The extra time was also longer than initially announced, which confused us. Because this is football and we have to accept and respect the referee's decision."

In the first leg at Hang Day Stadium, the two teams drew 2-2. Therefore, both Hanoi Police Club and Buriram entered the second leg final at Chang Arena on the evening of May 21 with the highest spirit to find the champion.

The second leg was tense and dramatic. Quang Hai made a great contribution when he assisted Jason Quang Vinh to open the score. Hanoi Police Club then took a 2-0 lead thanks to Leo Artur. However, in the final minutes of the second half, Buriram scored 2 consecutive goals to equalize, bringing the match into extra time.

It is worth mentioning that Buriram's equalizer 2-2 was scored in the 90+8 minute while the referee only gave 4 minutes of extra time for the second half. This caused a strong reaction from the coaching staff as well as the players of the Hanoi Police Club.

In the previous situation, Hanoi Police Club had a chance to end the match. Japanese referee Koji Takasaki suddenly blew the whistle for a foul by Buriram players without giving the Vietnamese representative an advantage.

In extra time, each team scored another goal, tying the score at 3-3 after 120 minutes. Both teams had to decide by penalty shootout and Hanoi Police Club could not take advantage of the opportunity, losing 2-3 and sadly watching Buriram lift the championship trophy.

With this result, Quang Hai missed the opportunity to win the Southeast Asian championship at both the national team and club level in the same year. Previously, he and the Vietnamese team won the AFF Cup 2024 in Thailand in January.
