On the afternoon of April 10, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City announced that it had just performed surgery to restore normal structure, physiological function and the ability to become a mother to a young woman with a rare deformity of having two vaginas.
The patient is Ms. N. (33 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City), often has pelvic pain, irregular menstruation, has been married for 3 years and has not been able to have sex because of the extreme pain when being intimate with her husband.
Ms. N's ovarian reserve test results were good, however, she had twice as many vaginas and uteruses as normal people, the uterus had a 6.5 cm long longitudinal septum, and the vagina had a 7.6 cm long septum.
Dr. Nguyen Ba My Nhi performed surgery to cut the vaginal septum, restoring the normal structure, allowing the girl to have sex and get pregnant naturally.
The septum is located along the vagina, causing the vagina to divide into two separate compartments, forming 2 vaginas (double vagina, separated by a strip of tissue), hindering sexual activity. This is a very rare congenital disorder, occurring in about 0.03% of newborns.
Normally, the uterus will have a septum in the early embryonic stage. As the fetus develops, the uterine septum will disappear on its own. In the case of two tubes not merging, a septum will form, dividing into two uteruses. Double uterus malformation causes the patient's uterus to be half the size of the normal structure, increasing the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.
To help Ms. N. have sex and get pregnant naturally, doctors performed surgery to cut the vaginal septum, restoring the normal structure, helping the patient to have intercourse easily, and at the same time cut the uterine septum to double the area of the uterine cavity.
