Many videos of cooking difficult Vietnamese dishes such as vermicelli with meatballs, vermicelli with grilled pork, La Vong grilled fish... have reached over a million views and received a "shower" of compliments from Vietnamese netizens.

In the video of cooking vermicelli with meatballs that reached 1.8 million views, the foreign girl skillfully blanchs ribs and discards the first water to make the broth clear, skims off the foam, soaks wood ear mushrooms and vermicelli, cooks the broth with rock sugar, seasoned with fish sauce, mixes in minced pork to make meatballs... When eating, she also adds chili paste brought from Vietnam, chili, and pickled garlic.

"The bowl of vermicelli with meatballs she cooks looks even more delicious than the one in the restaurant," one account commented. Another joked: "She's Vietnamese, I'm the foreigner", or: "She only knows how to cook vermicelli with meatballs, only wears jade bracelets, only cooks 7749 Vietnamese dishes, only more Vietnamese than me".

"The broth is very elaborate, a true Vietnamese dish," another person commented.

Indeed, this girl has been "approved" many times by Vietnamese netizens when cooking dishes that require a lot of knowledge about Vietnamese food to make, such as chicken curry, rice rolls, beef stew, pork stewed with shrimp paste, vermicelli soup with crab...

"The most difficult dish for me is banh cuon, because at home I don't have a specialized steaming lid so it's hard to get the right thickness for the cake," Diamond Logan, the girl behind the "million-view" video series, shared with Tuoi Tre Online .

My boyfriend is Vietnamese but I am the one who cooks Vietnamese food.

Diamond Logan, 24 years old, is African American and lives in Chicago, USA with her boyfriend Nguyen Viet Truong Giang, 25 years old.

Cooking videos on Logan's TikTok channel, which has nearly 59,000 followers, often start with the phrase "When your boyfriend is Vietnamese but you're the one cooking."

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , Logan honestly said the reason he created a Vietnamese cooking channel was to... sell snacks.

She used to live in Vietnam, and her boyfriend was born and raised in Hanoi .

While no longer in Vietnam, Logan started craving Vietnamese snacks and came up with the idea of selling these snacks to those who missed the familiar taste like him.

But to get more people to know about this idea, Logan thought she needed to reach them through social media, and the most effective way was to show people the dishes she and Giang loved while living in Vietnam.

So Logan's cooking channel was born "at once", because she often cooked Vietnamese food for her boyfriend. The rest was just filming, editing clips and posting them online. Although the idea of selling snacks was not successful in the end, Logan still kept the channel and continued to share videos of cooking Vietnamese dishes with respect and love for Vietnamese cuisine .

"I hope that through what I'm doing, I can convey Vietnamese culture to many other people, just like how Giang and his family shared their culture with me," Logan confided.

"Fall" in love with braised pork

Logan said she loves Vietnamese cuisine and the unique flavors of the dishes. "The reason I really fell for Giang from the very first days of dating was because he cooked me braised pork according to his parents' recipe," Logan said.

Initially, Logan learned how to cook Vietnamese food online and asked her boyfriend to try it to see if it tasted authentically Vietnamese. After several trips to Vietnam and the opportunity to cook Vietnamese food with her boyfriend’s family, she quickly mastered many dishes.

"I really enjoy spending time cooking Vietnamese food, and love the sophistication of the ingredients. Every time I see Giang's eyes light up when he gets to eat the food he craves, or when we both crave it, I feel very happy. Sometimes he even compliments me that the food I cook is better than the food at the restaurant!", Logan bragged.

According to Logan, Chicago has a large Vietnamese community, so finding ingredients to cook Vietnamese food is not too difficult. She and Giang also go to great lengths to buy the ingredients they need.

Furthermore, on every trip back to Vietnam, Giang's parents always prepare ingredients for both of them to bring to the US to make cooking easier. "Logan and I have the same taste in food. I really like her creativity and her spirit of always trying to learn and improve her cooking skills," Giang shared.

What both of them didn't expect was to be loved so much by everyone.

"I'm happy to be able to introduce Vietnamese culture in a way that can make people more proud of their culture. For Vietnamese people, cuisine is an important way to express emotions, so I don't want to cook 'for the sake of it', cook 'inspired' or not follow the recipe properly," Logan said.
