Girl dies after wisdom tooth extraction

Brazilian Marina Mesquita Silva, 23, died two days after having her wisdom teeth removed at a private clinic, in what is believed to be a rare case.

The incident is being investigated by police, media reported on May 23.

Earlier, on May 10, Silva, from Leme, São Paulo, underwent surgery to remove her wisdom teeth. Two days later, she returned to the clinic because of severe pain at the extraction site. After a clinical examination, the doctor discharged her.

By May 13, the pain was still so severe that Silva went to the city emergency room, where she was diagnosed with an acute infection and abscess at the extraction site. Left untreated, the infection spread to other areas, causing serious complications that led to her death.

Silva's father, Antonio Ivan Pereira, hopes the police will soon investigate and clarify the case. "We don't know what happened, so we are just waiting for justice for our son and the others. This can happen to anyone," he said.

Leme City Hall said the results of the investigation would be released within 30 days. The clinic said it had done everything possible to protect the patient's life and health.

In fact, dental infections or infections after tooth extraction are not uncommon. During tooth extraction, harmful bacteria have many opportunities to enter the bloodstream and cause infection. Wisdom tooth extraction is also a riskier procedure than regular tooth extraction. One of the most common complications is dry socket, when the blood clot fails to develop in the socket. This occurs three to five days after surgery. Dry socket causes pain or throbbing in the gums and jaw, which can be as severe as a toothache. The inflamed empty socket has an unpleasant odor.

Some people may experience nerve damage or bleeding after wisdom teeth removal.
