"We are excited to introduce Grok 3, a product that is capable of outperforming Grok 2 many times in a very short time," billionaire Elon Musk shared at the Grok 3 launch, which was live-streamed on social network X earlier this week.
Grok 3 has “10 times the computing power” of its predecessor. This time, the xAI engineering team used an expanded training dataset, including court case files. The pre-training process was completed earlier this month.
"We're improving the model every day. You'll see a clear change every 24 hours," Musk said. According to the billionaire, Grok 3 can program games and handle PhD-level scientific questions. This chatbot is also being used internally at xAI, saving hundreds of hours of labor.
In early tests, Grok 3 outperformed OpenAI's large language model (LLM) GPT-4o, Google's Gemini, and DeepSeek's V3. Notably, Musk's chatbot also has "advanced reasoning" capabilities.
Elon Musk's Grok 3 outperforms rivals in several tests
As xAI engineers explain, their advanced reasoning model aims to answer complex questions by breaking down instructions into smaller tasks. The AI will try to check and compare facts before coming up with a solution, thereby achieving the best results. Competitors such as OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Google have also developed similar models.
Grok 3 has two levels of reasoning, Think and Big Brain . At the first level, the chatbot will demonstrate reasoning when presented with requests. While Big Brain requires complex tasks that require more computing power.
According to Musk: "The best AI must think like a human. It must think about all possible solutions, question itself, find all the solutions, then repeat the process and find the answer based on the most basic principles. That is a very important ability."
In addition, the xAI engineering team also introduced the "next generation search engine" - Deep Search. Musk called it "AI that can query the truth of all things". Previous versions of xAI search have been criticized for spreading misinformation about the US election, allowing the creation of offensive and controversial images.
Billionaire Elon Musk further revealed that the Grok chatbot will soon feature a synthesized voice similar to ChatGPT's enhanced voice mode. xAI also plans to open source Grok-2 in the coming months.
Grok 3 will be available to X Premium Plus subscribers starting at $40 per month. The premium plan on X increased from $16 to $22 late last year.
xAI is also introducing a new subscription plan called SuperGrok that gives users early access to the chatbot’s latest features. It is expected to cost $30 a month.
Last week, at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Mr. Musk called Grok 3 an AI model that is "scary smart" thanks to the amount of aggregated data used for training.
Billionaire Musk is known to be someone who often warns about the potential dangers of AI. He and Sam Altman were the first founders of OpenAI. After disputes over how it was run, Musk left the organization and founded xAI in 2023 - when OpenAI's ChatGPT had taken the world by storm. The Tesla CEO also repeatedly criticized his former company for "operating for profit", contrary to its original ideals. Since then, Musk and Sam Altman have been involved in constant disputes and lawsuits.
Recently, Musk continued to offer to buy OpenAI for $ 97.4 billion but was rejected. Meanwhile, xAI has also continuously achieved many achievements in a short time. The company has a "Colossus supercomputer" to train AI. Last year, they revealed that this supercomputer uses 100,000 of Nvidia's latest GPUs. At the launch of Grok 3 on February 17, xAI engineers said they had doubled the GPU cluster to train Grok 3.
