Two more national intangible cultural heritages
Dr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City, said that the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just decided to include the New Rice Festival of the Co Tu people in the three communes of Nam Dong, Long Quang, Khe Tre and "Folk knowledge of Bun Bo Hue" in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Accordingly, celebrating the new rice is a typical agricultural ritual, reflecting the close relationship between people, nature, and gods in the cultural life of the Co Tu ethnic group. The festival takes place after each harvest season, with the meaning of thanking the gods, especially the rice god Giang Haro, for giving the village a bountiful harvest, a peaceful and prosperous life.

Preserved and passed down through many generations, the festival is a characteristic of the traditional rice cultivation cycle of the Co Tu people, and is also an important occasion for the community to gather, have fun and strengthen solidarity.
The ceremony can take place within the family or at the community level of the whole village, with activities such as worship, sacrifice, gong and drum dance, Padil Yayă dance, traditional cuisine and symbolic decoration of the Xônur sacrificial pole.
"The festival's inclusion in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List demonstrates respect and recognition for the unique cultural heritage of the Co Tu ethnic minority community in Nam Dong, a land rich in tradition, playing an important role in the mountainous cultural identity of Hue," said Dr. Phan Thanh Hai.
In 2014, famous culinary expert Anthony Boudain introduced Bun Bo Hue on the American television channel CNN as "the most wonderful soup I have ever tasted".
In 2016, this dish was included in the list of Top 100 valuable Asian dishes by the Asia Record Organization.
In 2023, Taste Atlas (international culinary site) ranked Hue 28th out of 100 cities with the best food in the world, in which Bun Bo Hue is considered "a must-try Hue delicacy when coming here".
The inclusion of "Folk knowledge about Bun Bo Hue" in the list is a worthy recognition of the historical, cultural, artistic and economic value of this typical dish imbued with the identity of the ancient capital.
Bun bo Hue is not only a famous dish both domestically and internationally, but also the crystallization of hundreds of years of folk knowledge passed down through many generations.
This dish is closely associated with religious life, community activities and traditional craft villages such as Van Cu and O Sa vermicelli villages. This dish deeply reflects the soul, lifestyle and culinary culture of Hue people.

Dr. Phan Thanh Hai emphasized that through many historical ups and downs, the folk knowledge of preparing Hue beef noodle soup has been preserved and promoted by the community, especially culinary artisans.
"With their sophisticated skills, they preserve the secrets of cooking beef noodle soup, from choosing ingredients, how to simmer the broth, seasoning to presenting the dish, contributing to affirming the class and soul of the specialty dish," said Dr. Phan Thanh Hai.
Hue has 8 national intangible cultural heritages registered.
The leader of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City said that with the new rice festival of the Co Tu ethnic group and "Folk knowledge about Bun Bo Hue" just being registered, Hue now has a total of 8 heritages included in the list of national intangible cultural heritages.

Previously, Hue singing was registered in 2015, in 2016 it was the Deng weaving profession of the Ta Oi ethnic group and in 2019 it was the traditional ADaKoonh (New Rice Celebration) festival of the Pa Co people. In 2024 alone, three heritages will be registered including the knowledge of sewing and wearing Ao Dai, the Dien Hue Nam festival and the traditional craft of making Van Cu vermicelli.
Dr. Phan Thanh Hai shared that the heritage registration not only affirms the value of Hue's culinary culture but also creates a legal foundation and important motivation for Hue to continue to promote the conservation, promotion and development of heritage values in the cultural industry development strategy, contributing to the development of local tourism, economy and culture.
"In addition, this is also a meaningful stepping stone in the journey to make Hue a UNESCO creative city in the culinary field," said Dr. Phan Thanh Hai.
The leader of the Department of Culture and Sports said that in the coming time, the unit will coordinate with related units, artisans and the community to continue implementing activities to teach, honor and promote heritage, contributing to spreading the value of the heritage of folk knowledge about Bun Bo Hue to the public at home and abroad.
So that this dish is not only the pride of Hue people but also a symbol of Vietnamese culture in the international arena.
