On May 23, Mr. Ha Van Bac, Head of the Cam Lo - Dong Ha Forest Ranger Station, said that about 300 egrets, herons, and some other water birds, possibly including grey herons, are gathering in the recently harvested fields in Nam Dong Ha ward ( Quang Tri ).
From early morning to late afternoon, flocks of birds spread out across the rice fields. Amidst the remaining rice stalks after the harvest, hundreds of egrets leisurely strolled, constantly using their long beaks to probe the soft mud in search of food. Occasionally, an egret would raise its head after catching a golden apple snail, then slowly rejoin the flock.
The rural landscape comes alive with the sight of white egrets standing out against the yellow-brown stubble.

The most impressive moments are when flocks of birds take flight simultaneously. From the rice fields, hundreds of pairs of wings flap vigorously, creating long streaks of birds across the sky. Groups of birds fly in succession, covering a vast area, creating a rare natural spectacle in the plains.
In the late afternoon, flocks of birds take shelter in the melaleuca forest along Dang Dung Street. At noon, egrets circle and search for food among the fields.
Locals say the flock of storks appeared about a week ago. People are delighted and are taking good care of them.

According to Mr. Ha Van Bac, the appearance of the stork flock not only signifies biodiversity but also shows that the local ecological environment still maintains favorable conditions for wild birds. Many locals consider the storks as "familiar guests" of the countryside, and therefore are always conscious of preserving and protecting them.
The egret, also known as the snail stork, is a rare species listed in the Vietnamese Red Book, typically inhabiting mangrove forests. Previously, this species was spotted in Quang Tri province during the summers of 2020 and 2024.
Mr. Bac said that the unit has stepped up propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage people not to hunt, trap, or drive away the storks, and also called on the community to work together to protect the stork population.
